Mkv with AC3 playing as stereo on ps3 but 5.1 on the PC

Postby RandallRaines » Tue May 19, 2009 9:23 am

Hello.

I have an issue with some mkv files.
On the computer, using Mediaplayer classic and AC3 filter, i get the 5.1 soundtrack.
But on the ps3, it only plays as 2.0, even when trying the transcode folder.
I've checked the mkv with mkvmerge GUI, there's only one audio track so...

It also happens with mp4 files.

Thank you for your help.

Is 5.1 selected in your PSM settings? It may be set to 2.0

Yes it is (actually it is 6 channels - 5.1 - that is selected).
Most of the MKV files i have works fine. But some (but all mp4 files) only play as 2.0 audio track (only while streaming to the ps3, every mkv and mp4 has AC3 5.1 audio track when watching them on the computer).

Post the MediaInfo (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en) for the files in question. It may just be that it also has a stereo track that it's defaulting to instead of the AC3.
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

Well that's what i thought.
But how can you explain that i actually have 5 channels when using media player classic ?
Here's a screenshot of AC3 Filter while playing the movie (SW Ep III)

I don't blame PS3 media server, i think it's a great software. But MediaInfo shows that the Audio channel on that file has ID 2, when on a file that has 5.1 (both on pc and ps3) it is ID 1. Is it possible that it has something to do with it ?
I did play the same file on both PC and PS3, there is a definite difference in what i can hear.
BTW, I use PS3 MS ver 1.10.1 (I have weird lag issues with 1.10.5).

Thanks

It's probably doing the same thing as Dolby's PLII Cinema Surround Sound where it fakes a 5.1 track from a stereo source... although the picture with the input levels seems to indicate a 5.1 source...
