Ubuntu 14.04 PMS Install (Loud Static Buzz Sound)

Postby samuel89 » Tue Apr 22, 2014 11:02 pm

Hey all,

So I have installed a brand new copy of Ubuntu 14.04 on a machine that I plan to use as a media server to other devices in my house (e.g. my ps3 :P)...

Other than the fact that all of the repositories seem unsupported at 14.04 and ffmpeg has been depreciated, I downloaded the PMS files manually, unpacked them, installed mencoder, mplayer, vlc, openjdk-6-jre and manually got hold of ffmpeg and dumped it into my /usr/bin/ dir.

I can run the application by kicking of the PMS.sh file and my ps3 picks up everything fine, until I try to play a video that is... When I try to play a video it displays the video content fine, however, I get a very loud whiny buzzing noise (incredibly annoying) instead of the audio.

I have done some searching and many of the recommendations that have worked for others:
- Lowering audio volume on ps3 (via triangle).
- Ensure left+right audio set up on ps3 (via triangle).
- Unchecking the DTS option under common transcoding options (pms).

Have unfortunately failed, does anyone else have any ideas where I could be going wrong? Or some tips/tricks on debugging the issue?

Sam

Hi
I'm facing the same problem here (very loud/high-pitched buzz, also playback is too fast);
problems I didn't have in previous Ubuntu releases.

I am half-running. using a trick suggested on Webupd8 (http://www.webupd8.org/2014/04/10-thing ... buntu.html) I got ffmpeg working. mencoder and tsmuxer produce loud static, but ffmpeg seems to work ok, with some limitations, eg for some mkv files I am unable to fast forward. this is 1.90.1 / Build 3a4304c72 (2013-08-17)

I am actually facing this same issue, also I noticed that if I try playing many files, my computer ends up swapping as pms does not seem to release the files I tried to play, but keeps them in memory.

according to the Ubuntu fora, people seem to be compiling ffmpeg with some success as directed here

http://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/UbuntuCompilationGuide

but I haven't seen any reports of success getting this to work with PMS. is a working ffmpeg that critical to PMS??

I got 3/4s of the way through compiling as per the instructions and gave up after too many errors popped up (I'm sure due to my haste/inexperience rather than a fault of the guide). instead, I downloaded the compiled versions from

http://ffmpeg.gusari.org/static/

but the results are still the same: mencoder and tsmuxer both produce loud static, ffmpeg works but only in very limited fashion.

when I installed Trusty i also used an old remastersys backup I had to install a Quantal partition, so for the moment I can reboot to that for a very nicely-working PMS, obviously not an optimal solution however.

Right now I'm on Mint16, based on Saucy so maybe my workaround can help you.

In the Software Center, on Software Sources I have edited the url of the PPA:
From:
Code: Select all
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/happy-neko/ps3mediaserver/ubuntu saucy main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/happy-neko/ps3mediaserver/ubuntu saucy main

To:
Code: Select all
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/happy-neko/ps3mediaserver/ubuntu raring main
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/happy-neko/ps3mediaserver/ubuntu raring main

And it works perfectly using the old repo.

Same problem here.

The strange thing is that when I play a .avi file I get the high pitch, but when I play a DVD the sound works, but is slow while the video is fast (not in sync).
By the way, that is using my Sony TV as a client.

When I use my Samsung Galaxy S3 as a client, it works fine. Video and Audio are perfect...

Any ideas what can be the problem?

The solution proposed by pepelu solves the audio/playback issue, but the version in that repo is so old that subtitles don't work on mkv files!
Anyone knows how to solve this?

Tried the solution from Pepelu and it worked for me.
Thanks!

I hope someone can find the time to create a working version for the current repo
