Judging by the log messages and the code, PMS is waiting for output from the MEncoder process, but doesn't get it for 5 seconds and then it gives up.

What I don't get is that your log shows the "waiting 500ms" message only two times before the "stopping process". I would expect exactly 10 messages before that happens. If you saw 10 messages, my tip would be to try and recompile with a higher number for the timer comparison, e.g.

Code: Select all
         while (is == null && timer < 100) {

This would allow the MEncoder process 50 seconds to come up with a stream.

However, since you only see two messages "waiting 500ms" followed by a "There is no inputstream to return for ...", something else must be happening.

Code: Select all

WARN  2013-08-19 21:22:14.427 [New I/O server worker #1-3] External input stream instance is null... sounds not good, waiting 500ms
ERROR 2013-08-19 21:22:14.927 [New I/O server worker #1-3] There is no inputstream to return for Caprica.S01E02.Rebirth.HDTV.XviD-FQM.avi - [MEncoder Video] {External Subtitles}

Seeing two of those messages (and not more) means that an inputstream was returned (and not null)!
Yet the "There is no inputstream" message implies that null was returned?!

These two findings don't match up, and it has got me quite confused. :roll:

Thanks for the answer, @mazey

I tried your suggestion. However, no deal.

What I see is that any video that is related to Mencoder or has subtitles will trigger the "There is no inputstream to return for " message.

Some of the other videos in the transcoder folder play fine (always without subtitles).

Happens that today sometimes I can play the VLC version WITH subtitles. \0/
The only problem is that subtitles are HUGE (two lines take more than half of the screen).

Here is the log from the video that was working with subtitles (I cancelled the streaming myself, BTW):
Code: Select all

INFO  2013-08-23 10:26:42.751 [StartPlaying Event] Started sending D:\Downloads\TV Shows\Caprica\Caprica - S01E02.avi to PlayStation 3 on 192.168.0.103
INFO  2013-08-23 10:26:52.943 [Buffered IO End Checker] Destroying buffer
INFO  2013-08-23 10:26:54.442 [StopPlaying Event] Stopped sending D:\Downloads\TV Shows\Caprica\Caprica - S01E02.avi to PlayStation 3 on 192.168.0.103
INFO  2013-08-23 10:28:44.293 [AWT-EventQueue-0] Configuration saved to: C:\ProgramData\PMS\PMS.conf

Now my question is how to make subtitles smaller with VLC (since this is the only option that is working right now).

Thanks a lot for your help!

Quick update:

I have PMS version 1.50 lying around in my Ubuntu system (same machine, dual-boot), and it works perfectly with the exact same files.
So I think we can discard the PS3 Firmware as suspect, right?

@Raptor399 I'll try again later and I'll post the entire debug somewhere so you can give a look, ok?

Thanks for the help, guys!
I am sure there is more people with this same problem out there.

Cheers!

I think sometimes I get more of these messages, but I am not sure if it is always. I'll check it later.

Thanks!

Getting no messages or less than 10 messages is a good thing.
It just indicates how busy the computer is; the more messages, the more difficult life is for your computer. Getting no message means your computer managed to produce output within 500 ms, getting 7 messages means it took 7 x 500 ms = 3.5 seconds to produce output.
