update on mkv (ive left all requested info and files in my posts above): No mkv files play properly no matter which engine you use. They cant visibly fast forward other than 1.5 speed. Made sure ffmpeg and vlc were latest versions but no impact.

I've also come across this problem, however, I was able to fix it (works so far).

There are two options:
1. Open PS3 Media Server and go to Tab > Transcoding Settings > Common transcode settings > General settings > Transcode buffer maximum size, in megabytes (maximum: 600):: I changed the default 600 to 400 and now my videos, including anime, play without skipping, stuttering, or crashing.
2. Edit PMS.bat (located in PS3 Media Server default directory) file and change ONLY THE NUMBER from this string "-Xmx768M" to something higher, like: 1024, 1280, 1536, 2048, etc. Make sure your computer has enough available RAM, very important!

This link will explain more in detail, viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&start=30#p38484. Go to 2d post...

(Possible question for the creator)
NOTE: I upgraded from ver 1.60.0 and always edited the PMS.bat to increase the java heap size but after installing ver 1.81.0 and editing the PMS.bat, I get an error when attempting to run the program, "Windows cannot find 'javaw'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I do not understand why this occurs; even after changing "javaw -Xmx768M" to "java -Xmx768M" I receive the same message, "Windows cannot find 'java'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

@ransomink - follow the FAQ for checking your java install (specifically your environment variables) - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&start=30#p41214

@blubaz - per the debug.log, you are having a mix of issues:
For the cannot grow buffer message - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&start=30#p38969
For the localhost/UPnP helper messages - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&p=32731#pms-pms_faq_connectivity_NIC
For the MEncoder/MPlayer messages - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&start=50#p78300

@gvamp - please start your own thread and provide a valid debug.log per the FAQ - viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3507&start=30#p38484
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

Still seeing a lot of stuttering. Running a 2011 Mac Mini dual core i7 with 8GB RAM. MKV file starts fine and then I see this start to pop up again and again in the debug log:

DEBUG 2013-05-15 21:31:19.267 [Thread-35] [mpeg2video @ 0xee7160]rc buffer underflow

The bitrate spikes to about 100mbps. Here is the MediaInfo. Also, I set the Maximum buffer to 400 and changed the java heap size in the conf file to 2048.

@blubaz: Glad that helped!
@meskibob: I'll take a deeper look at the java link. The environment variables are fine, so it may be an installation issue.
@zprewitt: What is your Maximum bandwidth in Mb/s (General Configuration tab) set to? If you haven't already, try setting it to the amount specified in the "Traces" tab. Besides that, most people set it slightly below 100 (to avoid the spike and stuttering). Try that out and see if it works...

I've tried a handful of different values, none worked. How do I find that info in the Traces tab?

1. Make sure PS3/connected device is on
2. Turn on your server
3. Once the server has connected to device, go to the "Traces" tab and scroll to the bottom
4. Near the very bottom you will see, "Address /(IP Address here) has an estimated network speed of (number here) Mb/s

Example: Address /192.168.1.1 has an estimated network speed of: 85 Mb/s
