After update to 1.81 - PMS shows the red cross. 1.80 works

Postby nucleardirk » Tue Apr 23, 2013 12:12 am

Hi There!

Windows 7, 64 Bite. lateest Java version (32 & 64 bit) installed:

Version 1.80 started, found all media devices and worked like a charm.
Version 1.81 installed, started, first time it found all media devices. After reboor of the machine it doesn`t found anyone.
Restarting the server - doesn`t help.
Deleting the config file fixed the problem for one time - server found renderers and started, but after closing and restarting the red cross appeared again.

Downgrade to 1.80 (including deleting the config file): Everything works again without any issues. also after reboot, server restart, closing and restarting program etc.

I've been having problems finding the my devices on 1.81 too. I assumed it was related to another problem I had (see my problems here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=15760&p=78725) but maybe it has to do with version 1.81. I'll try downgrading and see what happens.

EDIT: Yup, downgrading to version 1.80 ([mod]removed link to unofficial copy of PMS - 1.80 is still available on google code[/mod]) fixed all of my issues and I am once again able to stream videos without issue to my PS3.

Same here. 1.81.0 wont find my PS3; 1.80.0 does in a snap!
A patch have to rise in the near future fixing this.

Connection issues with 1.81.0

Postby chris38 » Sat Apr 27, 2013 9:15 am

On Windows 7 PC.

Uninstalled Version 1.80, installed Version 1.81. The server does not find any renderer. Red cross appears.
Restarting the server - doesn`t help.

Deletion of the config file would fix the problem for one time only - server found renderers and started, but after closing and restarting the red cross appeared again.

Downgrade to 1.80 (including deletion of the config file): Everything works again without any issue.

The main change from 1.80 and 1.81 was in the network connection code.
Perhaps something broke for your particular setups.

Try reverting commit 98c85bcebd and rebuild PMS, see if that works.

Code: Select all
git revert 98c85bcebd

It will give a confict, but that is a harmless conflict in CHANGELOG.txt. Building PMS should work fine.
Let me know if this helps solve your problem. Reverting that particular commit will not be not the final solution, but it will give us a handle on where to start looking.

Tested build d0c36c169 with both the x64 and x86 JREs of 1.7.0_21 on a x64 Windows 7 box without any connection issues, even after multiple machine restarts and PMS restarts.
Try reinstalling PMS with "Run As Administrator" on the installer.

i use the pms builder tool to compile so i dont know how to revert just that 1 commit with it, basically the renderer only picks up pms when a sending alive message is sent, so after 5 mins or so after launching pms. before it would detect it straight away because it would send alive a few times every 20 secs or so before stretching it out to 3 mins example below. tested on ps3 and bravia tv. im guessing it doesnt do it every 20 secs at start on the latest snapshot.

Code: Select all

Before building, you can change the contents of the file "src\main\java\net\pms/network\UPNPHelper.java" to what it was in 1.80.0. This will accomplish the same as reverting.

basically the renderer only picks up pms when a sending alive message is sent, so after 5 mins or so after launching pms. before it would detect it straight away because it would send alive a few times every 20 secs or so before stretching it out to 3 mins example below. tested on ps3 and bravia tv. im guessing it doesnt do it every 20 secs at start on the latest snapshot.

This is strange, because that bit of code is the same across 1.80 and 1.81. First PMS waits 10 seconds before sending an ALIVE, then 20, and from then on 180. So in my humble opinion, this is not the thing we're looking for. However, this does hint that ALIVE messaging works, whereas listening to other commands doesn't seem to work.

So the one thing that might cause the change of behavior is that the listener no longer forces a network interface on the multicast socket it creates, something it did do in 1.80. The reason it was removed is that forcing the network interface on the socket broke PMS for all Java 1.6.0_45 users on Mac OSX.

I suspect that your particular network setup requires forcing that network interface on the multicast socket.
