Switching away from Java

Postby Pyrone89 » Fri Aug 31, 2012 10:42 pm

As everyone has been aware of, especially lately, Java is subject to abuse.

Wouldn't it therefore be wise to start stepping of Java in favor op Python 2.7.3 for example, as many people (including me now) do not want Java on their system, but are thus locked out of using PS3 Media Server.

Would like to here the thoughts on this.

All software is susceptible to vulnerabilities, regardless of the language. The vulnerabilities you're referring to relate to the use of Java applets (run in the browser), not Java applications (run on the desktop/server):

Oracle Security Alert for CVE-2012-4681 wrote:These vulnerabilities are not applicable to Java running on servers or standalone Java desktop applications.

One of the reasons I like PMS is the fact its cross platform- which as you know is as a result of Java.
[I'm no developer, and maybe Python is also cross platform, but what I'm trying to say is I'd hate to see PMS lose its cross platform nature.]

The only reason Java is on my PC is because of PMS. I would be very happy if PSM moves away from Java. I am currently looking for an alternative to PMS because of Java.

Because you don't like Java, devs will not learn another languages and/or limit others because lang will not be cross platform.
If you don't like it, don't use it. ;)

this should be closed, the whole app is java based and changing it would involve starting from scratch and no reason to, java works on nearly every platform and works fine.
