Support for MP3 Album Artwork Size >100K

Postby netman63129 » Mon Nov 14, 2011 4:58 am

Hello, I'd like to request support for MP3 album artwork that is greater than 100K in size. It seems that many MP3s downloaded from iTunes or Amazon now contain artwork that is 100K or larger, some are as large as 1500x1500. These do not display in the lower-left corner when streaming MP3s to the PS3. Interestingly, they do show up when browsing a playlist so hopefully it not a difficult request.

Thanks,

Mike

Confirmed that version 1.52.0 does not add this feature. It would be so nice to view all of my high-quality album artwork while the song is playing. Please, please consider this :-)

You're hitting a PS3 limitation, and having PMS do an extract, compress, and then re-embed before streaming a file probably won't happen (although maybe a dev will look into it). And yes, this is a different functionality than showing the album art in the folder tree while browsing.

Confirmed not added in 1.70.0.

Hi Meskibob, I'd like to get confirmation that this is a PS3 limitation because my testing indicates otherwise. First, the artwork displays fine if the MP3 is copied and played from the PS3. Second, it also works fine on the PMS if the file is less than 100K. This nice round value seems like a developer choice. If it is a compression issue, I don't mind waiting a few milliseconds to see my image. It seems strange that the images are displayed fine when scrolling through my iTunes playlist on the PS3 using PMS. It is only when the song is played that the image is not displayed. You say that this is different functionality and I believe you but why is 100K the magic number? I would think that a nice power of 2 value like 64K or 128K would indicate a system limitation.

Most artwork images now exceed this value. I can't believe that I am the only anal person on this board that would like to see my artwork displayed in the PS3 Visualizer when streaming MP3s? :-P

Playback from media servers is different from playback of local media.
Playback is different than browsing through the file tree.
As to why 100k is the number, you'd have to ask Sony.

Most-likely you'll still need the proposed extract/compress/embed"fix" in PMS, but if/when that will happen is up to the devs.

I opened a support case with Sony more than a year ago and they stated that there is no such limit. Do I trust Sony support to know what they are talking about...not really but at least they responded. I still believe the most likely culprit is that something in PMS is capping the display size to 100K. It would be nice to have confirmation from dev one way or the other? It would be even better to provide the "proposed extract/compress/embed fix" to know for sure.

Confirmed not working in 1.90.1.
