VOD Cars - works with mplayer web, not with VLC

Postby buju » Mon Apr 13, 2009 3:23 pm

Hi, can anyone figure out why http://feeds.vodcars.com/vodcars/rss works when transcoding with mplayer web, but not with VLC?
When using VLC as an RSS streaming engine it looks like there are several issues. Any ideas why? I am using 0.9.8a, on Windows XP SP3, with PMS 1.10.6, but this issues existed for a long time, in all PMS versions.

Ides, suggestion? I am sure that everyone can reproduce the issue above.
Thanks.

Hello buju,
It seems we two regularly tryout different webstreams.

I don't know why it does not work but I do know VLC 0.9.x/1.0.x has major issues on webstreaming, WMV seems to be more or less broken and newest libavcodec package gives them compatibility problems.

http://libsyn.com/media/vodcars01/3cp_20090123.m4v

This is related to VLC bug and/or MPEG2 compatibility on 2997/100 fps setting (29,97 fps). MEncoder can handle a forced fps change automatically or PS3MS constructs a better commandline with appropriate fps change attribute.

See my Apple Trailers issue where I discovered fps issue first time.

This is an internal VLC conversion error it gives, so PS3MS receives just an audio track. It will not work as PS3 dlna client expects to receive a valid video+audio stream.
Code: Select all
[00000448] avcodec encoder warning: MPEG1/2 does not support 2997/100 fps

Here is my standalone VLC debug script, if you add fps=30 setting then it works. If we could hack PS3MS VLC use-case to automatically identify a forced fps need and add it to the commandline, or even better passthrough the netstream. I think vodcars streams should work directly on PS3, they are AVC/AAC videos after all.

Code: Select all
set source="http://libsyn.com/media/vodcars01/3cp_20090123.m4v"
c:\vlcetest> "C:\Program Files\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" -vvv -I dummy %source% :sout=#transcode{vco
dec=mp2v,vb=4096,fps=30,acodec=mp3,ab=128,channels=2}:duplicate{dst=std{access=f
ile,mux=ts,dst="output.mpeg"}}

Is there any way to use CoreAVC with PMS? It should be an option, for those who have it.
Maybe CoreAVC would solve this issue. CoreAVC kind of handles everything I throuw at it...

BTW, your explanation is a bit too techie for me. I am trying to keep up, but I am no transcoding expert.
But I will surely try to keep up. Thanks for your time.

shagrath, any suggestions? I have SEVERAL RSS video streams that do not play, likely due to this issue.
Please advise if we can hope for any improvement.

And are there any news in terms of not transcoding streams that are supported natively by PS3, such as AVC/AAC?
Thanks.
