You could try in this way:
go into the transcodific setting and then on "Mencoder"....
after this try to disabilitate ASS/SSA subtitles....i had a similar problem and after this i solved

obviously the file video and the subtitles must have the same name...

this works for me with 1.54.0 on 10.8 / Java 1.6.0_33-b03-424 / iMac 2.7 8GB ram

with 1.60.0 still no subtitles...

OK, more detailed description:

1. Your computer specs (CPU, memory, OS) and the exact version of PMS you are using (e.g. "1.53.0" or "Build 99932ae01", not "latest version").
Computer: iMac Mid 2011, 3,1 Ghz Intel Core i5, 12 GB 1333 Mhz DDR, OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion).
PMS: PS3 Media Server 1.60.0., build f097bb0d7 (2012-07-17)

2. The device you are streaming to (PS3, XBox360, etc).
Streaming to a PS 3, which runs on firmware 4.21. Not using a custom renderer.

3. Your local network setup.
iMac is connected to an AirPort Extreme via a 5Ghz network. PS3 is connected by 100mbit network cable. Never had any problems.

4. Which engine you are using if you are transcoding (MEncoder, AviSynth/MEncoder, TSmuxer).
Not sure, but I think its MEncoder.

5. Detailed information on what is not working.
PS3 won't display any .srt files.

6. From the "Traces" tab: a debug.log file excerpt or the whole file zipped

I removed 1.6.0. with Applcleaner (even deleted the config file), still no subs.

Wikkus, few things:

1. You are not using latest PS3MS, See this post for instruction about running latest snapshot build viewtopic.php?f=14&t=14753
2. Please upload your srt file too (for Suits.S02E04.HDTV.x264.mp4)
3. upgrade to latest PS3MS, restart server, navigate to this episode's folder, go to #TRANSCODE# folder and select [mencoder] item with subtitles mentioned. Then upload new debug.log (do not just copy-paste from Trace tab, click debug.log button on bottom right corner).

Just a quick update:

Can't get to the nightly build server, so I reinstalled PMS 1.5.4. No subs. When I disable ASS/SSA subs in the Mencoder menu, subs do show! I tried the same with 1.6.0, but the subs still do not show.

I tried this with multiple files and .srt's. Under 1.5.4, with ASS/SS subs disabled, they all work.

Weird right. What could be the problem that it will work under 1.5.4. but not under 1.6.0.?

I will try the nightly build tommorow (gives a bad gateway error now) and get back to you. Should I file a bug-report otherwise?

Tried to play the stuff with the latest build, through http://pms.smoeller.de/job/pms%20(trunk)/lastStableBuild/net.pms$pms/ (PS3 Media Server (3-aug-2012 15:22:23)). It won't play any of my files, which do work on 1.5.4. Also tried build #282 (4-aug-2012 17:23:24). That one gives a network error, so I cannot display any files.

Got any other tips I can try?
