After closing PMS if file is still locked, check javaw.exe process in task manager. If you found it, kill them (PMS wasn't closed correctly)
Then you can edit file, save, start PMS again.
For some cases javaw.exe process (PMS application) is not properly closed so you can do it manually.

Is it possible that this javaw.exe could be used by other apps? I know other things on my system use Java. I would not like to mess up other apps.

You guys are very helpful, but I don't get why you fellows are chasing this so hard, when I am happy to blame the bluray player. Enough so, that I am spending most of my time and energy to just get rid of it. Just wondering...

I am having this issue as well. If it helps, I will get a trace log and post it.

Here is the log, but it doesn't look like it shows much info, regardless of setting the level to TRACE. I tried to play an avi file that I know worked before.

Since I was running 1.54, I went ahead and moved to 1.60. It didn't help, and the trace log doesn't look any different. This time I actually zipped the log.

Okay, I'm making some headway. Looks like the most recent firmware update for the S590 caused the player to pay more attention to the mime type being sent by PS3media. I modified the following to 2 lines in the SonyBluyray.conf renderer config file to more properly reflect the mime types, and now avi and mp4 videos play okay.

Supported = f:mp4|m4v v:mp4|h264 a:ac3|dts|dtshd|truehd|aac|lpcm|mpa|mp3 m:video/mp4
Supported = f:avi|divx v:divx|mp4 a:ac3|lpcm|mpa|mp3 m:video/x-divx

Both above entries previously were configured with the video/mpeg mime type. The videos showed as mpeg files, but used to play okay. Now the more accurate mime type settings seem to be needed. I am still having an issue with wmv files, however. They show up as [trancode], and if I put in an entry in as follows:
Supported = f:wmv v:wmv|vc1 a:wma n:2 m:video/x-ms-wmv
the wmv files are not listed at all when browsing. I used to be able to work around the wmv file issue by using the video/mpeg mime type setting, but with the newer firmware, that no longer works. I did confirm wmv files can be played on the bluray player via usb. so I know they work. Anyone have any ideas?

I figured out how to get more logging into the debug.log. I had to modify the logback.headless.xml file. Here is a log file from when I try to browse for some wmv videos with the wmv entry in the renderer config (as per my previous post). Maybe PS3media is doing everything it is supposed to, and the issue is with the S590.

For me anyway, it was also required to change mkv to be "m:video/mp4" to get them playing again. Obviously, it will depend on what you're MKV's are actually encoded with I suppose, but that should be the case for most I'd think.

Well, to top off this problem with the Sony bluray, the D-Link wireless bridge, it (and my other HTPC equipment) was attached to, died this morning. I suspect it has been on the way out for awhile, performance was getting real flaky sometimes. But this morning, it was finally finished. I ordered a Netgear device to replace it -- I am not looking forward to this... setup on these type of devices is not always fun.

I am using PS3 Media Server 1.60.0 on Windows XP. It recognizes my Sony BDP-S590 as an SMP-N100. Based on other posts in this thread, I edited the "# --- video ---" section of the "C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\renderers\SMP-N100.conf" like this:
