Hi, I have the same issue that since versions after v1.04, I have to wait up to 3 minutes before Media Server shows up in the XMB. The fact that v1.03/v1.03 shows this instantly is just proof that the media server made a deliberate change in the programming. I assume by delaying the (alive/broadcast) timer from every 10 seconds to 3 minutes is what has caused this delay.

I still don't understand why this change has been made, as I am not aware of any negative effects by putting the timer back to 10 seconds. Now there seems to be a fair amount of people that have to wait up to 3 minutes before Media Server is shown. great piece of kit otherwise!

Yes, it was a deliberate change, and I assume it's because there's no need for a server to announce itself every 10 seconds. Besides, the real issue is that something in your setup is not allowing PMS to accept/reply to the PS3's M-Search request when the PS3 boots up (or when you do the Search for Media Servers, or when it comes back from a game or internet browsing). It'd be better to figure out what exactly is causing that issue as you're actually missing part of the PS3's functionality and blaming it on PMS.

I just posted a detailed DEBUG a couple of posts up. Can someone review and offer some helpful insight into why PMS doesn't appear on my XMB immediately like it should? I have a variety of other hardware generating requests, as well as at least two other media servers running on the same LAN. Maybe there's some interoperability issue between the various devices/servers? Or some other issue I'm overlooking. But it's not Windows Firewall as that's completely disabled. It's not Peer Guardian as that's not currently running on the machine. It's not anti-virus, I have none.

So my guess it's it's some dependency issue, interoperability issue, or something I'm completely unaware of. Regardless, I need some additional assistance troubleshooting. I'm happy to post this somewhere else external to this thread but I opted for here since there were already comments specific to the newer builds not showing in the XMB.

If there's not some easy/clear cause and solution to my particular issue why not consider reinstating the ALIVE messages as before. It would be an easy fix without any negative affects that I'm aware of.

In that log, when the very first M-Search comes from the PS3, PMS responds, as it does with the next couple that come in, but the PS3 doesn't seem to reply to those responses. Maybe a packet sniffer (like Wireshark) will help diagnose why the PS3 isn't responding... If you do end up using a packet sniffer, you're going to want to remove all the other LAN traffic otherwise the log will get really cluttered. And this could also help diagnose if there is actually a device incompatiblity issue. Who knows, it could also be an issue with just a specific model of PS3, although I doubt this.

Also, I guess one other possibility is that PMS currently sends a very specific reply when it recieves an M-Search. Maybe switching the code around so it just replies to M-Search's with the standard UPnP Alive announcement (which seems be to working for you) would work for more users. But that's up to Shagrath to approve/reject

Just an FYI... I never had this problem. My PS3 immediately sees PS3MS every time I boot up my PS3. I have been using PS3MS since 1.03 version and the latest I have is 1.10.51 both on wired and wireless. No matter what order I start the PC or PS3, my PS3 always sees the server immediately on start up.

BTW... this is my first post and I've been using this amazing piece of software for over 5 months. Excellent!

A trip report from using 1.10.620 on a vista 32 ultimate sp1 box consisting of a 3.2GHz processor with 1.5GB of RAM:

I use it for streaming flac music files to my ps3 wirelessly. My music directory has 9,115 flac files and takes up 192GB divided among 23 genres. My main use case is to shuffle within a genre or browse by genre/artist.

Communication betwixt PS3 and PS3MS: Great, they find each other within 30 seconds consistently.

Media Library Build Times: Massive improvement. This used to take hours and now takes <5 minutes. The medias.data file size was 393,217 KB with 1.10.51 and is now 294,914 KB.

Media Library Browse Time: Another massive improvement. In 1.10.51 this was unusable. Enumerating genres would take >5 mins and listing subtrees would time out. Now browsing each level takes about 5-10 seconds. I would like to see it even better but a huge improvement. Browsing the big list of artists is still a pain and times out with a PS3 2104 DLNA error on a regular basis, but that's not particularly germane to a 1.10.620 trip report.

Media Library Genre Completeness: Problem here, unfortunately. Listings under "genre", "genre/artist/album" are missing most artist entries. All of the missing artists are browseable under "artists" in media server. Other music databases, like media monkey or tversity can see the genres OK, so I'm thinking this is not an issue with the correctness of the genre encoding. I've tried resetting and rebuilding the media library to no avail. After I manually browse an artist, that artist does not subsequently show up under the correct genre.

I hope this info is useful, thanks for a great product! Let me know if I can provide any other information.

I'm trying the latest build (1.10.620) with my library of about 15,000 songs, and it's still taking a few hours to build the DB for some reason. I reset the media library before installing the new version.

Once again, for comparison Winamp builds this same library in a few minutes.

Am I doing something wrong?

My specs: AMD Athlon 64 X2 DUal Core Processor 4200+, 2.21 GHz, 1GB RAM

All I can say is that this latest version is fast, FF @ 10x actually works on all the videos I've tried so far without hesitation. Browsing media is fast, actual time to start play is fast. Loving it. Haven't tried the media library yet, don't like how it sorts all the files. But I may give it a try again.

Also older versions+this one have problems to terminate javaw.exe process when PMS is closed. Then when PMS is started again, more javaw.exe processes running what makes problems...
