5% of picture cut-off when streaming to BRAVIA

Postby Robert S » Wed May 09, 2012 8:28 pm

A few days ago I discovered that I don't have to stream to PS3 but instead can stream directly to my Sony BRAVIA W5800. But when I do this about 5% of the picture seem to be cut-off (a bit on each side), no matter which screen setting I use on the TV. Even when I rescale a 16:9 source to 4:3 (so that there are black boxes at each side) still some part is cut-off at the side. Can I get around this by changing the config file? I did not find an applicable topic in the FAQ (the closest thing I found was the topic about wrong scaling, but that does not really apply here).

I use PS3 Media Server 1.52.1, I transcode with MEncoder and I use the default Bravia5500 configuration (as PS3 Media Server recognizez my 5800 as a 5500, I would suppose there is not much difference between the types). I don't suppose that network setup or debug log is relevant for my problem.

I was not sure if I should post this here or in the Alternative Media Renderers" subforum, so please excuse me, if I chose the wrong one.

Yes this is a knowed issue on Sony Bravia TV.
Same think with Serviio : http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2956
I think that one solution is to upscale to a HD resolution 1920x1080 with DAR=4:3.

"Overscan", that seems to help on a quick glance, thanks! I did not expect to find such a setting in the "Subtitles" section (though I did not know that such a thing is called overscan anyway).

A hint for other people who want to do this: if you set a value > 0 and a video transcoding does not seem to work check this: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=8883&p=68255&hilit=overscan+exception#p68255

I'm not talking about TOP/BOTTOM overscan commonly used for subtitles, but when streaming, 5% of picture cut-off in both side (Left/Right).
The only solution to have the all video size is to transcode at HD resolution 1920x1080.

Yes, overscan compensation needs transcoding but overscan is not top/bottom fix only ;)
it adds black bars over whole image what I know 8-)

Well OK I see the oversan option, so you add 5% oversan (width) for all video transcoded ?
For me 5% break the aspect ratio then the "-vf softskip,expand=::::1:16/9,dsize=4/3" option does not work anymore !!

Check the discussion and code line 1612: https://github.com/ps3mediaserver/ps3me ... 9c220bdfe1
New Subjunk maybe uses expand instead of scale but anyway this code can be in conflict with overscan or your custom mencoder options.
I don't remember the code how overscan is handeled but I suppose when you will use overscan and also custom "expand" command in MEncoder parameters, maybe conflict arise.
Check the debug log with overscan enabled and disabled and provide the log. Also specify what custom MEncoder params are you using in renderer.conf or in PMS Gui(pms.conf)
Thx
