mencoder temp folder freebsd/freenas

ive searched around a bit on the forum and the googler
i am having some choppiness when streaming a 17gb mkv file, i suspect either the processor being overwhelmed or the temp folder is on the system drive i have which is not meant to have this sort of action on it(its a usb drive). if i let it sit for a while i see the proc spike but no network activity, then i resume play and theres no choppiness which leads me to believe there is some temp dir somewhere that needs a little love

does anyone know where the temp folder is for mencoder or mplayer on freebsd 9/freenas .7.5?
ive got the directories set up like this according to the debug.log of PMS:

i would like to make sure that mencoder is using a folder on my raid rather than the memory stick that hosts the OS

Remuxing/Transcoding is in memory only (if you're using the default engines)

Thanks, that was my other suspicion, the memory allocated only shows using about 50% and most of the activity is showing on the processor. I am getting another 4gb stick with some more reliable/faster memory today so i will have to test some more.

how much ram is typical for streaming an mkv that is a couple gigs in size?

when i ran ps with the movie playing i saw the java process for pms as well as the mencoder process running, if I allocate more ram to the java process running pms with the -Xmx switch this does not necessarily let mencoder use this memory does it?

looks like no more choppy playback...
i moved /tmp by doing this:

cd /
chflags -R noschg /tmp
rm -rf /tmp
ln -s /mnt/zfsPool/tmp /tmp
chmod -h 777 /tmp
chmod 1777 /mnt/zfsPool/tmp

put the new corsair 2x4gb sticks of ram in

and the part that i think made the most difference, moved the box down into the basement and put it on the same wired router as the ps3. my network layout is like this : modem < router < wired in ps3 then off of the router connected to the modem i have another router upstairs acting as a wireless repeater to give internet access upstairs without wires going through the house. i think this was causing just a little too much latency. the nightly firmware on the dd-wrt release im using seems to not have the best repeater signal for some reason. i had thought the wireless-n repeater link would have been enough bandwidth, oh well...its cooler in the basement
