Stutter 1080p MKV on 1000Bt Network

I have done research for the past three days and this is a problem that's been hunting me, I went out and I bought a Linksys EG008W 8 Port Gigabit Switch to updated my 100M/bit Network,Because I wasn't able to play 1080p videos, because the videos would stutter, so I figured it was the network. I also have a Western Digital Mybookworld 750Gb Hard Drive (Where I keep my media files) on the Switch (External HD is also Gigabit Ethernet 1000Mbits/s), The PS3 Also 1000Mbits/s, and My Imac which I bought a few months ago 1000Mbits/s and I have the Ip Manual and on 1000bt/ Full Duplex (Model Name:iMac,Processor Name:Intel Core 2 Duo,Processor Speed:2.8 GHz,Total Number Of Cores: 2,L2 Cache:6 MB, Memory:2 GB,Bus Speed:1.07 GHz). All of this equipment HD, PS3, IMAC, go to the gigabit switch on a Cat6 cable. I tried to play the 1080p videos, and they still stutter. I have played with different configrations on the Mencoder, (Crazy bit rate, Low Quality poor CPU) I Even put a 1080p video on the Imac's hard drive to see if the external hd was lagging, but it makes no difference. It Stutters. For the past three days I've noticed that some had a similar problem, and I've tried some of the solutions provided like increasing the Keyint: to 25 and 50 with no luck. So I have two questions for this great community. 1. Can anyone help me by offering some suggestions on why my files stutter??? 2. From previous post I learned that "keyint" manages bit rate, but what do the others do (vqscale, vqmin) ?? Also the files seem to do much much better on a pc laptop that I have dual core 1.5ghz with 100mbit network card. I get to the first 7 min without stuttering. I have tried to use the same settings on that ps3 media server app on the pc to the imac, but it makes no difference. And for all of you that are in the 1080p streaming quest thru ps3 a good file to test your 1080p stream is with the file elephants dream hd. 10 min file that will rock the hell out of your network is so detailed packed, I see that file as the ultimate test.

I have the same imac as you 24" 2.8 min is the 1033 mghz buss
but any how us this beta http://files.exonet.nl/ps3/pms-beta-r316.zip

Make sure you have keep dts audio in stream check thats under common transcode setting
not under mencoder make sure enhanced multicore support for h264 hd content is check

I use to get stuffering on this imac before those new features came out

you could allso use vmware or parrelele desktop and run it under windows thats works well

Thanks I'll try it and post the results. Also If I use the Different windows platform on the imac should I Install the Hali media splitter and CCC Pack and the other decoding as I have them in the laptop?

How do you run, your files on your imac without stuttering?? Under the Beta that you recommended, or running the windows platform and if so, what setting do you have checked??

i can run them under the setting i told you for the mac

but some movies dont play at all

I have micro xp install on vmware same setting as mac seems to play more mkv then on the mac setting are set the same no need to install any other software

First of all, nice peace of software here guys! I've tryed everythings on the market and here is the best one in it's category.

Same problem here. I have a MB dualcore 2.4 with 4 gig of ram and os x 10.5.6. My test file is Madagascar 2 1080 blueray rip in .mkv.

I'm a senior network ingineer and I can tell you that:

Since I have the same problem, I tryed all possible configurations and after that I tryed to isolate the problem by sniffing my network (PS3 in manual 1000bt full on Linksys wrt610n and NDAS 500gb hdd in 1000bt too). Well everythings seems ok on the network part. Now because of trying every other streaming servers on the market, I had the same problem everywhere else. Here is my conclusion based on lot of experiences, observations and trials:

the problems seams to come from codecs. The Mencoder used for transcoding do the tricks for a lot of needs, but it has his limits and 1080 files with his throughput requirements is just too much for it. That's why on PC's with other codec pack can, in that specific situation, perform better.

For info, I only have problems with 1080 files. 720 and 480 just worked as a charm.

My workaround now:

I transcode my .mkv with handbrake with the ps3 profil and I use rivet (medialink will do the trick too) as mediaserver. this products are limited by the natives supported formats of the ps3, but are alot faster than other servers/transcoders/remuxer.

So Rivet and PMS are both running on my mac and depend of the situations, I use'em both.

PS: just 1 thing usefull here, seens it's my job I can tell you that PS3 works a lot better with cat5e cable for 1000bt than cat6 ones. I saw some threads on forums about this problem and here is the solution, use good cat5e cable instead of 6. Finally when you want to use 1000bt, set it manually (no autodetect) and if it refuse to work in the internet test connection, try another cable. Don't just reliate on LED colors or succesfull internet connection test.

I thought I'd mention that I've also been battling with trying to solve a 1080p stuttering issue as well. It would play back smoothly for a while and then eventually end up stuttering. Tonight I downloaded PS3 Media Server version 1.20.409 http://ps3mediaserver.googlecode.com/files/pms-macosx-1.20.409-BETA.dmg and everything is running perfectly. I've been watching a movie for over an hour without a single hiccup. The movie file is an h.264 MKV with DTS 5.1 surround and I'm running a hardwired gigabit network. My settings are as follows:

I get constant stutter on my imac playing 1080p also, everything else is fine. I am on gigabit setup also. Going back to the old version actually made it worse. It also appears that my cpu isnt even being tacked all the way.
