FreeNAS 8.1 PS3 Media Server plugin?

Postby QuadraQ » Sat Nov 19, 2011 6:58 am

Hi all,

I know I'm really early on this considering FreeNAS 8.1 hasn't even been released yet, but I can't help dreaming about a FreeNAS 8.1 box with a PS3 Media Server plugin. Any chance that something like this will be possible once FreeNAS 8.1 is available?

i think a NAS will never have enough CPU-Power so why not use a PC to stream the content lying on the NAS? (i have a NAS with the possibility to mount it's filesystem with NFS on a Linux-PC running PS3MediaServer)

FreeNAS is designed to work with low energy chips like the Atom chip, but they are still full PCs so there's more "power" in the form of cpu/gpu processing than you would think. The whole idea of a FreeNAS system, is a very energy efficient PC that acts like a simple server for the rest of the network - which would be a great match for the PS3 Media Server software.
