I have a 3.2GHz Q6600 and a wireless N router and desktop adapter (though of course the PS3 is G) and seem to have finally gotten rid of 720p stuttering problems with a 15Mb bandwidth limit and the "Good" transcoding settings. I'm using Mencoder with standard CCCP codec pack (no Coreavc, Avisynth, etc.). I've tried and tried but cannot get "Best" transcoding quality to work over wireless with 720p video.

I'm aware cost is always first choice but will a N adapter increase price that much?

Sony has always been and still is losing money on every PS3 sold so you can see why they did not implement an N card, even today an N card (for a laptop) cost approx. 2x the price of a G card plus a lot of consumers are yet to move to N

You could try using a Wireless-N ethernet bridge:

- WAG600 from Linksys
- Airport Express Apple
- Netgear
- Power Adapters
- etc

They should solve the Wireless-G issue and should increase your bandwith!

ok... this is my first post in this forum..

I had the same problem... Wireless in ps3 sucks... I was transcoding a movie in the other day, an 1080P, and it became stutering.. So i have connected it to 100Mbs... and after a while it becames stutering... Incredible... So thank god sony guys puted a GigabitEhternet card in ps3... i connected my ps3 with an CAT6 cable, and my gigabit pc and i had no stutering...

Its all about Mbs That movie was at 115Mbs... IT is incredible... but it was what happend to me..


So if you are thinking trasncode HD content trough wifi, think twice.. why do you download HD content, if you are going to see in standart defenition??


PS: i had to connect a 30 Meters ethernet cable to do this... The pc is in another room...

Luckly my house is new and I have rj-45 plugs in all rooms. I've connected it thru wired and problem solved. It was a good ideia use a wireless-n bridge. Never thought of that.

My Specs:

DELL Q6600 XPS420
2 gig
Netgear Wireless-N network PC to Modem Router
Airport Express Ethernet Bridge on PS3

I've copied a file from PC to PS3 to check bandwith. Airport Express increased bandwith to 1,6 Megabyte/sec. Multiply by 8 and you have the number you should use as bandwith limit in the PS3 Media Server (great app).

When no transcoding is necessary (for example when using native MPEG 2 files) it works perfect, no matter which settings u use. When the files need to be transcoded ISO / MKV etc, I have the best result in the "Best Quality" transcoding setting.

I'll keep tweaking untill "Crazy Bitrate" becomes an option.
