Samsung TVs and external subtitles

Postby psiho » Wed Jun 29, 2011 11:44 pm

Samsung TVs (at least my C5000 and D5520 series) seem not to support subtitles inside MKVs. I though of simple workarround to include external subtitles in alternative folder for those TVs on my network. However, PMS and Samsung and external subtitles together do not play, in fact lates PMS crashes if I try it.

I fount at least 10 topics that touch above subject but no solution and final posts often have wrong data. In example, one of those states that DLNA specification does not support external subtitles which may be right but it does not mean it cannot be done.

Bottom line is that both Serviio and Mezzmo serve external subtitles to my Samsungs very well. So, there must be a way for PMS to do it too. Maybe there's just no will to do it? I used PMS for a long time with my Bravia and ps3 and would hate to have to make a switch now. All other settings work perfectly and this seems like a last (but very big) issue in my setup.

Hi All

I Have the same problem, everything works, and renders from my PS3, but i cant get subs to work on the samsung tv.
I Have tried to move up avisynth/mencoder, but that does not change anything on samsung, but it breaks the ps3-playback alltogether :P

I hope for someone to verify that it can be done.

I get no errors in the log, it just does not show the external subs..

Thanks in advance

Did you update your TV firmware recently? what model of samsung you are using. I vaguely remember that PS51D6900 <1013 was able to run mkv with subs through PMS. If you own Galaxy s, can you please try whether the issue also happening to that device as well.

Thanks

I have the same problem with my Samsung UE32C6700. The problem is the same for AVI+SRT and MKV movies with contained subs. The subtitles show okay when I render on Totem + Coherence (DLNA plugin) on linux. I use the linux version of PMS, and have ASS/SSA disabled.

I don't understand why one renderer would render the subs perfectly and another would not. But then, I'm a complete n00b in :). But to me this means the subs aren't rendered into the movie stream as pixels but as some kind of metadata, am I correct? And the problem would then be that the Samsung TV doesn't understand that data, whereas Totem does.

I'll see if Samsung's own Share Manager software can handle srt subs...
Thanks in advance,
Matthijs
