MEncoder Issues (Updated 20 Apr 2011)

This thread is to keep track of MEncoder issues that affect us.
I've become more proactive about reporting the bugs so hopefully we will see some progress as the project is still quite responsive with bugfixing.

• Multithreading multiplies audio sync problems
• Audio delay setting ignored in MEncoder unless -ss has a value
• Audio sync for file worked previously, now broken
• VOBsub displays incorrectly over light-blue

Fixed:

• Update for libass (r34383)
• DVD/VOB audio initial offset not detected in MEncoder (SB17)
• Update for libass (r34099)
• ASS/SSA timing breaks after seeking (r33999)
• ASS/SSA support (r33920)
• External VOBsub support without .ifo files (r33789)
• AC3 no longer works, only ac3_fixed (r33589)
• VOBsub subtitles display ugly (r33574)

Hey Subjunk,

Thanks for being proactive on this, I've been hoping for SSA/ASS return support for a long time. I noticed in the new 1.30.* releases (both official and betas) that when i load a video with external .ass files the video is now smooth. However now the stylizations are fairly broken. I was using your beta builds 1.2*.* before the 1.30.* releases and at least in mkv embedded files the Stylizing that were embedded in the internal sub file would be kept. I believe you said this was mostly a MEncoder issue for a while, but I hope that this gets fixed up, it's kind of odd to see a multiple translated signs on the bottom of the screen and not know which sign they go to.

i just installed the 1.30.1 version for mac and i'm using lion.

i am using this software for a long time and never had problems.
now the hebrew subtitles are mirror like and are not displayed correctly.
please help. i'm using the ISO-8859-8 code and i read here that maybe fribidi can fix the problem but it's leading to a corrupted data.

and was reffered here. idon't know how to enable fribidi also... (not that genius i guess)

Hi, thanks for letting us know. I have contacted the developer that compiles OS X for MPlayer for you.
It's possible that it wasn't compiled with Fribidi support, in which case we can fix it in the next version. We'll see what he says.

SubJunk is right!

mencoder for OSX was compiled without Fribidi support because it broke the compilation back in the days. That was a long time ago, I'll see if I can get it to compile with it.

just that you should know this version pms-macosx-1.20.409-BETA.dmg was perfect for hebrew in mac osx.
didn't need fribidi or anything

That version of PMS used a mencoder version from 2009. A lot has changed since then so an upgrade was necessary. It appears the new version does need fribidi.

I'm having problems rebuilding mencoder, alas, so I can't provide you with an updated version.
As a workaround you could get the 2009 mencoder from the previous version of PMS and use that in the new version:

- Install the old version of PMS
- Open a Terminal and execute "cp /Applications/PS3\ Media\ Server.app/Contents/Resources/Java/osx/mencoder ~"
- Install the new version of PMS
- Execute "cp ~/mencoder /Applications/PS3\ Media\ Server.app/Contents/Resources/Java/osx" in the Terminal

Well it's different for different operating systems so I'll give 3 answers:
Windows: It has been supported for years and will continue to be
Linux: As soon as you update MPlayer on your machine
OS X: As soon as Raptor is able to build a newer version of MPlayer
