It's a feature of Java that has nothing to do with this program. Java will release the RAM if another program requests it, so it is actually not keeping any more RAM than it ever was.

First I would like to thank you for your hard work so we can all enjoy !
anyway, to the subject,
It didn't happened in 1.21.1 (1.21.1 is only few month old) , Transcoding ended, ram release, I guess now it's same Java as 1.21.1 , now I see 1.5G without any trancoding, 0.5G is my other programs and 1G by Java... all I have is 2G...means 0.5 free.
I'll check if I'll load heavy program I m using (video editing for example) if java will free the occupied RAM

I have tried 1.30.1 and noticed that after using transcoding (MEncoder) the usage RAM memory is above 1G , and stuck above 1G even no transcoding and renderer is off..
I have noticed also that this behavior was also in previous version 1.25.1.
In fact , I have always move back to 1.21.1 since it's stable version and not much
changes from this versions beside the bugs
If it may help to solve the problem, I am using Win XP pro SP3

Back then we had a hack that made Java release the memory before it wanted to, and that was causing problems for some users, so now it is working as it should be.

Thx. It had different behavior because in most recent builds developers removed some forced memory releasing which leads to freezes.
Java cleares own garbage collector as needed so it is "impossible" to forcefully ask java to do it.
Java will sometimes do it, sometimes not so Shagrath added four? calls to do it so the chance of cleanup is bigger.
Yes, memory is then released with bigger probability but it leads to side effects like application freezes and worse PMS performance.
Because of that it was removed so Java should handle it by own.
To let you know, when some other application needs more memory and system goes out of resources, now java kicks up cleaning GC so memory is released for other apps.
Because of that it is not bug but feature

I use newest version 1.30.1 and still in almost every mkv movie I need to remove header compression. Is this problem gone be solved in future version?

try disabling switch to ts muxer if ps3 compatible. tsmuxer cant read header stripped content, mencoder can now. well it should..
