Because the old version of mencoder is over two years old.
All the rejoicing for the new release is about being able to play formats that were broken in earlier versions.

Would it be worthwhile trying to talk to any of the programmers doing OS X versions of Mplayer (MplayerX or Mplayer Extended)? Or maybe the guy behind PEnGUIn Encoder (http://penguintool.blogspot.com/), which is an OS X GUI for mencoder? Would they have come up against similar problems?

Hi all,
(I'm new there, but I read this forum since a long time, but I decide to write something)

I was always fustrated by the fact that I always need to wait for a OSX release... So, I decide to look at svn myself and compile a release of the 1.22.0
Are we are !

I do this on my macbook pro 64bit, in 10.6.x with Xcode.
http://dl.free.fr/k3qXfYlNu

I decide to do this after a discussion with him http://otmanix.de/english/2011/05/15/pms-1-22-0/ that already provides latest release in a near past.
Do not blame me too much if it's not functionnal but it is on my mac so, I decide to provide it in case it's usefull for someone of you.
(as usual, I can just say that i do not do any modification on the code but i release it "as it is", without any garantee)
regards.

Congratulations, sebos!

Always nice to see people experimenting with their own builds.

I'm afraid that you managed to compile PMS 1.22.0 with old binaries.
Yes, PMS itself is shiny and new, but the OSX binaries underneath (that do the actual encoding) are still ancient.

Open a terminal and try the following to see for yourself:

Code: Select all
~> /Applications/PS3\ Media\ Server.app/Contents/Resources/Java/osx/mencoder
MEncoder SVN-r29241-snapshot-4.0.1 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team
No file given

Exiting... (error parsing command line)

For comparison, the current version of mencoder is r33488-4.2.1.

If you want to experiment with building PMS with the latest tools, check out the Compiling PS3 Media Server on OSX thread. Should be a breeze for you, seeing that you managed to build it before. :-)

Have fun!

Hi,
yes sure.. first thanks for the answer.
I already see this quite long script that try to handle all latest versions inside a build (a really nice/good jobs, impressive)... I will try it.

In fact, I already modify this script a little bit few days ago to include more "latest version" libraries to see if it's working fine with PMS gobal build.

But I got always the same question: why PMS dev to not include the lastest bin version inside their builds ?
and why they do not provide us a version for mac if they intend to be "mac binaries released"... I know it's not always simple but...
well I do not want to blame anybody,so...

I will do it and try to provide you a link soon (even if you already do it perhaps ! )
regards.

First of all, I am not one of the devs, so I cannot speak for them.

But I can make an educated guess based on these forums: most devs simply do not have a Mac and therefore cannot develop and test on it. Therefore they need the assistance of Mac owners like yourself to provide tips and help.

Also, keep in mind the devs are all volunteers who also have a personal life. Who knows how much time they have on their hands to actually research and develop solutions - if at all.
So if you do have time on your hands and would like to help out, be sure to post your findings on these forums. And be sure to post the sources and patches, not merely the binaries. As far as I have seen, the devs are more than happy to incorporate good solutions in the project.

Now Redlum did post an official release candidate 1 version about a month ago. There were problems with it, so he posted he was working on a official RC2.
I have tried to help out by analyzing what is going wrong with the latest versions of the OS tools, but am totally stuck there. I simply know too little of encoding or muxing to be of any help in that department, so there is really not much more I can do to be of assistance other than lurk these boards and see if someone with more knowledge comes by. :-(

HI Raptor399,
Things are moving faster than me. PMS is now 1.23.00...

In fact, just to be clear: I do not want to be "rude", I always try like you to help the community with my poor knowledge... I'm just a .NET dev and as I like so much Mac since 10 years, I do some dev on Mac for fun.
But, I do not know java very well. Anyway, I play with ANT so, this is why I try to compile myself a version of PMS for OSX.
So, ok I will try to perform a full version but it seems that there are some issues with mencoder (even if on my side, I do not find any issue during my test).
I'm using always all the latest version available... but I propose you to do something and provide the result in this forum and wait and see!

Again, I send a enormous thanks to all the people involved in this product (Redlum too !).
(mencoder recoding and command parsing is not fine... so, sure, this seems to require some java coding manipulation? I do not really know as I do not take time to look at internal stuff).

I need some clues...

I had some luck with one of the older community builds when I replaced mplayer with Mplayer-devel from Mac ports.

https://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk ... l/Portfile

I don't know enough to get that working with the build script, but it's worth a shot if someone else can give it a try.

That won't be necessary. I think I found the solution for the distorted and skewed audio! 8-)
See the Compiling PS3 Media Server on OSX thread for more info.
