PMS recognize PS3 as unknown renderer

Postby harry3 » Thu Nov 12, 2009 12:09 am

Hello all,
i have an problem to detect PS3 correctly (only detected as unknown renderer).
I'm using Linux Debian "Squeeze"
I use actually version x.x.366, but also older versions don't works.
It's importtant to know that two months ago it works always well !!
I only did an upgrade on the system, but i don't remember after which upgrade PMS don't works correctly.
At my windows pc's with win2000 and vista it works fine.

Strange is that in the log file there is no error, only written that there is a unknown renderer which is called PS3
Also the WEB.conf file don't work at the PS3

Could it be a problem of sun-java??

Please help me to let it run correctly again because i love it.

regards
harry

i have the exact same problem. at first at the main screen i would get the big red X mark while the trace showed i was connected. I then disabled my firewall and on the main screen it recognized that there was a renderer but not the xbox specifically and on the trace that's when i produced the "PMS recognize PS3 as unknown renderer" error. any way to fix this?

I had the same problem, I solved with this:

You have to execute pms from its own directory. Example (userdirectory replace with the name of your user):

cd /home/userdirectory/.pms
./PMS.sh

I have an script for this, "execute_pms.sh", with this command:

"cd /home/userdirectory/.pms && ./PMS.sh"

I hope that it works for you.

Hello all I'm having the same problem and I don't know how to above solution is supposed to work as this software requires root privileges to operate, is there something I'm missing, I've tried and tried with no success (that is with the desktop shortcut I can execute it just fine though a terminal, but who wants to do that :P) if anyone has been successful in this matter I would really appreciate your help. Thanks

You may have a packaged version that requires that but a) PMS doesn't and b) I strongly advise against running PMS (or anything else) as root if it doesn't need to be.

As for this issue, you can find more details here:

I'm on opensuse 11.3 and I don't know if it's a distro specific thing but I have always had to be root in order for the software to work (I'm using the latest build from http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver) whenever I don't run as root it just hangs at the Encoding UTF-8 Trace (and this might have something to do with it also but this is what I get after Encoding UTF-8)

That's exactly why to avoid root. It breaks things for non-root. Shut down PMS and try this:

Code: Select all
sudo chmod 0777 /tmp/javaps3media

Alternatively, remove the directory and let $USER create it:

Code: Select all
sudo rm -rf /tmp/javaps3media
cd $PMS_DIR
sh ./PMS.sh

Thanks chocolateboy! Your fix along with nocknock's script work beautifully.

Also this might sound like a dumb question, but in this case, what exactly is the $ supposed to mean?
