1080p video studdering during playback [Solved]

Postby tongkk » Wed Mar 04, 2009 9:42 am

1- PC configure: Intel Q9300 , 2GM Ram, Video file stored in external USB harddisk, XP Sp3, d-link 4300 Gigibit router
2- Network connection : PS3-->Panasonic homeplug (190Mbit)<----->homeplug------>Router
3- Problem: When streaming 1080p dts mkv with subtitle , video studdering occur randomly, when studdering occur the bitrate shows something range from 40-80 Mbps .
4- Transcoding engine: mencoder, dts convert to AC3

Setting in PS3 MS

1. When Mencoder MT support enable, the studdering occur earlier than when this option is disabled. In both situation , 500MB buffer are full before start to play. When studdering occur, buffer are still full and CPU loading is about 50%.
2. PS3 bitrate limit set to 30Mbps, When video playing smooth, the bitrate shown in PS3 is about 30 Mbps, but when the studdering occur, the bitrate may be shown very high (e.g. 50 -80 Mbps) . For the same scene of the movie, disable MT support and play smooth which shown it is 30 Mpbs, when MT support enable, studdering may occur at the same scene and it may show 80 Mpbs!!

Very Strange, after I downgrade the PMS to 1.03, all problem of studdering playback disappear even 1080p video transcoding with subtitle!

I found that the studdering problem seems get worse every time after upgrade the PMS. Recently, after upgrade to 1.10.1, even 720p mkv with subtitle encounter studdering problem every 15-20 min even the buffer is full and CPU only 50%. I remember no studdering of 1080p before 1.04, and now even 720p studdering in 1.10.1.
And I will keep to 1.03 now!! :(

Just try 1.10.5, but studdering still occur! So I still stick to 1.03. Still the best for me!

the 2 versions are almost identical, from the transcode point of view (same mencoder_mt build, and no changes except the packet buffer size)

In my case, 1.03 is the only version that the playback is flawless. All other version show certain degree of studdering.

I seem to be having the same problem with stuttering, however it is the same with both versions of the client. Is there something that I maybe be missing settings wise or is it because I am trying to stream over wireless?

Thank You

In fact, 1.10.5 and 1.03 is a huge difference to me, 1.03 play 1080p mkv with subtitle very smooth (and the bitrate keeps constantly at about 30mbps, which exactly what I set in PMS) but 1.10.5 play studdering (the bitrate vary dramatically from 30 to something like 90 mbps). So I have no choice to revert back to 1.03. What is the problem ??

What is packet buffer size? is it make the difference, can I use 1.10.5 with 1.03's packet buffer size?

I reduced the data packet size sent on the network from 64k to 32k (too much TCP errors with 64k on my network)
but I'm quite sure it's not that

Since the latest releases all 1080p works flawless, and thats on the best quality profile (but on gigabit)
