mkv with vobsub subtitles

I have many dvd's converted to mkv container. The video is h.264 advanced profile, audio is typically AC3 and sometimes DTS. Subtitles are vobsub and are included in the mkv container but also present in the folder as .idx/.sub pair for extra compatibility.

The video and audio plays perfectly on my PS3 (i have yet to try DTS). My problem is, I cannot get PMS to display the subtitles. In Matroska I had to disable Autoload vsfilter, since matroska apparently only supports .srt text files natively. I have tried enabling autoload vsfilter, but that does not make any difference.

I have tried installing DirectVobSub, but that prevents any playback of that file.

I now use ffdshow with subtitles enabled, and that plays perfectly inside mplayer and windows media player, complete with subtitles.

MEncoder plays audio and video perfectly, no subtitles
TsMuxer ditto
AviSynth/MEncoder says Invalid data, haven't figures this one yet.
AviSynth/FFmpeg, not tried, need a FFmpeg for windows build

I do not wish to reencode/repack any files, i have more than 2 TB video data this way. Converted my entire DVD collection Also looking for a solution for my blu-ray's but this is not a high priority.

use the file inside the #Transcode# Folder, it should have multiple listings for various Audio Languages and Subtitles. For me I use it to watch Anime and often have MKVs with English and Japanese dual audio tracks, I often prefer Japanese and English Subtitles so it gives me say Japan Audio, Engs Subs. MKVs do require transcoding and a good network, I have gotten up to 65mbs as my highest bitrate according to PMS. So a good hard wired network is required unless you don't mind reducing some of the quality to limit it to say 15 or 25mbs.

However ensure you are using the #Transcode# folder, it should solve your problems.

So now I've got output with danish vobsub (.idx/.sub), but the video is stretched and does not have black top and bottom bars. I am using avisynth/mencoder now. When I just use the mencoder the video is scaled correctly with black bars, but then the subtitles are missing

My machine is 2,4 GHz Intel QuadCore with 4 GB ram running Vista/64

Plays perfectly in mplayer, well there seems to be some frame stuttering (more on the PS3 than on my Vista machine), like converting 30 fps to pal 25 fps or so. but no errors
