Remember that PMS server r400 is beta
I'm not disappointed in PMS. I'm disappointed in the PS3.
I have a large number of mp3's that I've ripped over the last 10 years (or so). Everything from 128 CBR to 192 VBR to 320 CBR encoded with at least 10 different version of LAME, plus other encoders, plus some that I did't add tags with what I was encoding with. They're all "valid" mp3 files. To have some of them not play for no readily apparent reason is frustrating.
Especially after my last media extender was a XBox 1 running XBMC (may it rest in peace). That played everything I threw at it (except HD video, but what are you going to do with 64MB of shared RAM?).
Anyway, enough rambling. The issue isn't with PMS, the issue is with the PS3 (or my expectations of it's capabilities).
