1.20.400 mp3 issue?

Postby gaktoid » Tue Mar 02, 2010 1:59 am

Two mp3 files. Both ripped by me. One encoded with LAME 3.97. The other encoded with LAME 3.98r.

All encoding settings the same (MP3 VBR V2). All tags the same (id3v2|id3v1).

The one encoded with 3.98r won't play. The one encoded with 3.97 will.

Any ideas?

I couldn't find any errors in the log.

you mean the ps3 refuses to play the 3.98r one ? or there's a parsing/visibility issue ?

PS3 refuses to play it. I've determined it's not a PMS issue. Sorry for not updating.

I put the offending mp3s on a thumb drive and the PS3 reports:
The data type is not supported.

I'm extremely disappointed in the PS3 as a media extender.

You say mp3 encoded with LAME 3.97 do play, so why the disappointment?
Remember that PMS server r400 is beta

I'm not disappointed in PMS. I'm disappointed in the PS3.

I have a large number of mp3's that I've ripped over the last 10 years (or so). Everything from 128 CBR to 192 VBR to 320 CBR encoded with at least 10 different version of LAME, plus other encoders, plus some that I did't add tags with what I was encoding with. They're all "valid" mp3 files. To have some of them not play for no readily apparent reason is frustrating.

Especially after my last media extender was a XBox 1 running XBMC (may it rest in peace). That played everything I threw at it (except HD video, but what are you going to do with 64MB of shared RAM?).

Anyway, enough rambling. The issue isn't with PMS, the issue is with the PS3 (or my expectations of it's capabilities).

I also got a couple of mp3s not playable on the ps3... you can't really do anything about it, cause there's absolutely no differences with working ones, so I can't even trigger some reencode mechanisms

my music isnt playing with either the newest beta or the last official release for osx. Occasionally a song will play, but it seems quite random when it will. Sometimes songs that previously gave me the "network error - 80710736", will play, but cease to play the next time i try.

Seems other UPnP server authors have been just as fed up with the PS3 and it's hit-and-miss ability to play mp3s. So they just decode on the server and stream PCM. Seems to work fine.

An alternative to think about.
