Difference between mencoder and tsmuxer

Postby paarsand » Mon Feb 09, 2009 8:19 pm

Hi!

I have a question here.

I have a few .mkv's wich i have trouble playing fluently on my ps3.

Its wireless, but that does not matter i guess, because they stream fine at 720p on my htpc.

With Mencoder, they stutter at some points of the film on the ps3. "the most detailed ones" but they do not stutter when i choose tsmuxer as transcoder.
Is the quality the same with the two? Because i cannot see any difference.

Is there a logical explanation? My htpc handles streaming .mkv-s from my storagepc just fine, but the ps3 fails.. both are connected through same router with the storageserver beeing the wireless one.

streambuffer in ps3mediaserver is maxed out. storageserver is quite powerfull.

English is not my native language, if you dont understand me i'll try to explain it in another way.

I have the exact same problem -- Mencoder consistently stutters for a few seconds at intervals of a couple minutes. TSMuxer will play entire 720 movies flawlessly. Mencoder stutters the same on low/high def.

I've got a quad core2duo, connections wired. Any help is appreciated!

CPU is not an issue, mine doddles along at 30-50% utilization after the buffer gets filled.

If you ask me its a bug in mencoder somwhere. 720p has never been a problem over my wireless 54mbit until i started to transcode the files.
Direct streaming works perfect with the htpc.

you are all wired, yet you have stuttering ? :|
that's quite rare

how can wired or wireless have anything to do with the case?

tsmuxer transcoded files works like a charm, and streaming the mkv.

The problem with the PS3 is the wireless performance. I have two laptops at home, both between 20-25Mbps on WLAN.
However, the PS3 performs only 5-6Mbps. So forget the WLAN in PS3.

tsMuxer is the best choice, least load on the CPU and the best quality and at the same time least bitrate.
I can almost stream every 1080p at WLAN with tsMuxer, but its because the low original bitrate.

 I hope you are joking
When you stream via tsMuxeR, video can have 5Mbit/s bitrate = Wireless will catch up the stream.
If you will transcode(MEncoder used), your bitrate on the same file will grow rapidly to e.g. 50Mbit/s and this bandwidth can be sent via cable only! (you can lower quality when Wifi used)
Theoretical Wireless speed it 54Mbit but in practice it is max 10-25Mbits
Theoretical and also physical speed via wires are almost the same, about 100Mbit ;)

aha, so a transcoded file gets bigger when streamed. thats ok.

But the issue here is that its an .mkv, wich is transcoded with both, but only lags with mencoder. If you get my point?

Yes, tsmuxer is "transcoding", but it's in the remuxing subset, which requires much less processing power and bandwidth than transcoding the entire video as mencoder does.
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

aha.. so there is no really good reason for useing memcoder? No visual difference? I cannot see any anyways.
