Unsupported data but files are ok?

I have maybe 1/2 dozen films in my collection that refuse to play.

The files play perfectly fine in windows (both in wmp and vlc) but whenever I play them via PMS they don't work.

The thumbnailer makes thumbnails for the files, I have also re-ripped and re-downloaded the files numerous times yet they refuse to play.

Is there some setting way I can check the validity to see if there is something wrong with them or some magic option I can turn on in PMS to make them work?

it seems none of your avi files are ps3's compatible... try copy one video on a usb pen drive, and play from it , in order to see if the server is at fault here

Weird, it's the film Step Brothers that doesn't work (amongst others) but I would say 95% work perfectly.

I'll copy Step Brothers and one that works onto a USB Pen and report back.

You can also use G-Spot Codec Information to find out what specific version of a codec they used, I have found that certain XVID builds do not stream to the PS3 and have to transcode them. Its quite strange.

OK, downloaded G-Spot and loaded on of the films that doesn't play.

How would I get PMS to transcode the file? Should it do it automatically? Is there any way I can fix the file so I don't need to transcode it?

XVID 1.0.3 usually plays fine for me however 1.0.1 and another build which I forgot had issues with. Go to the #Transcode# folder to force it to transcode. Inside the transcode folder depending on how you lay out your files you will get individual folders for each episode or movie. If the file is already in its own folder enter that folder if its in like a public directory called TV you will have to enter that one and you will have to find the new folder for your file you want to transcode.

So as I can see your file name. You would go into the S Folder of your movie Drive and enter the #transcode# folder then find the Step Brother folder and it should give you a few selections for different transcoder if you haven't changed any of your settings in PMS or nothing too significant you should have MEncoder as your first transcode option. Simply just hit X and it will begin to transcode and playback.

The Data Type Unsupported means that the PS3 cannot natively playback the file and trasncoding will be required. So in the future if that ever happens again, just transcode it with the above method. Often some file types will transcode automatically however XVID can often stream fine, its just for some weird reason certain XVID builds do not work.
