I tried uninstalling mencoder & ffmpeg to no avail.

Please provide details. It's not even clear from your post which platform (Ubuntu or Vista) you're referring to.

On WIndows, there's no need to install/reinstall mencoder. The bundled mencoder.exe works fine. Even old versions of mencoder should work, on any platform. The most likely reason for the red circle with the white cross is an invalid mencoder_path in your PMS.conf (assuming you didn't change anything else). Make sure you use double backslashes on Windows:

Code: Select all
mencoder_path = C:\\Program Files\\PS3 Media Server\\win32\\ps3mencoder.exe

On Linux, use single backslashes e.g.

Code: Select all
mencoder_path = \/home\/user\/bin\/ps3mencoder

Also note: ps3mencoder.exe must be placed in the same win32 directory as mencoder.exe on Windows, unlike other platforms, where ps3mencoder can be placed anywhere.

The single most important prerequisite is to ensure you're running the latest versions of:

On Windows, the uninstaller leaves behind PMS.conf and pms.jar i.e. the two things most likely to cause problems.

  • Make sure you have the latest JRE installed
  • Back up your WEB.conf
  • Uninstall PMS
  • Delete the C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server directory
  • Install the latest PMS build from here or from Subversion
  • Restore your WEB.conf
  • Add the mencoder_path to PMS.conf

If that doesn't work, please provide the relevant details requested here as well as the PMS debug.log and the ps3mencoder.log.

Re: Web content will not stream

Postby beagle » Wed Jan 06, 2010 10:17 pm

Thanks for all your help and effort but I have still failed to get web content to stream

Ok I have followed all the instructions including:
Make sure you have the latest JRE installed
Back up your WEB.conf
Uninstall PMS
Delete the C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server directory
Install the latest PMS build from here or from Subversion
Restore your WEB.conf
Add the mencoder_path to PMS.conf

In the traces tab I get the following when trying to access a web stream, here youtube:
[main] TRACE 20:47:20.140 It's ready! You should see the server appears on XMB
[New I/O server worker #1-1] TRACE 20:47:20.453 Renderer Sony Bravia 5500 Series have an estimated network speed of: 24 Mb/s
[New I/O server worker #1-1] TRACE 20:48:40.015 Starting transcode/remux of MAKE A DIFFERENCE MONDAY #1
[C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\win32\ps3mencoder.exe] TRACE 20:48:41.765 Process C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\win32\ps3mencoder.exe has a return code of 2! Maybe an error occured... check the log file

Here are my details:
1) Dell Dimension DIM9100
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.4GHz
1.00 GB Ram
Windows XP Home Edition
PS3 Media Server V1.11.369
2) Local connection is 54Mbps wireless from PC to wireless router.
Wireless router is connected to Sony Bravia W5810 by direct ethernet connection
3) Streaming to Sony Bravia W5810. Bravia config used is:
Code: Select all
# ps3mediaserver renderer profile for Sony Bravia 5500 series
# Refer to PS3.conf for help

RendererName=Sony Bravia 5500 Series
RendererIcon=bravia.png
UserAgentSearch=notusedhere
UserAgentAdditionalHeader=X-AV-Client-Info
UserAgentAdditionalHeaderSearch=BRAVIA KDL.+5[0-9]{3}

SeekByTime=true
#TranscodeVideo=MPEGTSAC3
TranscodeVideo=MPEGAC3
#TranscodeAudio=PCM
TranscodeAudio=MP3
DefaultVBVBufSize=true
#MuxH264ToMpegTS=true
MuxH264ToMpegTS=false
MuxDTSToMpeg=false
WrapDTSIntoPCM=false
MuxLPCMToMpeg=false

MaxVideoWidth=0
MaxVideoHeight=0
H264Level41Limited=true

#TranscodeExtensions=

StreamExtensions=
DLNAProfileChanges=MPEG_PS_PAL=MPEG_PS_NTSC|MPEG_TS_SD_EU=MPEG_TS_SD_NA|MPEG_TS_SD_EU_ISO=MPEG_TS_SD_NA_ISO

4) Use Mencoder for transcoding, in this case Mencoder Web (PS3Mencoder)
5) Using PS3Mencoder Web content will not work, get message "Playback not available", this also occurs while viewing any video using PS3Mencoder. When I remove PS3Menocder from the PMS.conf I am able to view all videos although web content does not work hence trying to use PS3Mencoder.
PS3Mencoder give the same error in the traces tab for web content as it does for videos
6) Attached

I've searched erverywhere for the ps3mencoder.log but cannot find it.

All help gratefully received!

Try running ps3mencoder.exe from the command line. Run cmd.exe, then:

Code: Select all
cd C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\win32
ps3mencoder.exe

What output does it produce?

Don't use it but will post for comparision:
Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\win32>ps3mencoder.exe
Usage: ps3mencoder.exe [ -Alib.par ] [ -Idir ] [ -Mmodule ] [ src.par ] [ program.pl ]
       ps3mencoder.exe [ -B|-b ] [-Ooutfile] src.par

Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\win32>ps3mencoder -h
Can't locate PAR.pm in @INC (@INC contains: C:\strawberry\perl\vendor\lib .) at -e line 957.

Code: Select all
http://movies.apple.com/movies/wb/inception/inception-tlr2_480p.mov -prefer-ipv4 -nocache -quiet -oac lavc -of lavf -lavfopts format=dvd -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video:vbitrate=4096:threads=2:acodec=ac3:abitrate=128 -ofps 24000/1001 -o c:\ccc.mpg
Can't locate PAR.pm in @INC (@INC contains: C:\strawberry\perl\vendor\lib .) at -e line 957.

I don't have Perl installed (I thought that this compiler will include needed libraries to "compiled" .exe file)

It's the linux (2.6.31-16-generic) version on ubuntu 9.10 on a home built pc
2x AMD Athalon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5600+
3354MB
PS3 Media Server v 1.20
wired connection via Dlink gigabit switch to PS3
MEncoder Web is not available* (red circle with line through it)...MEncoder does work for files stored on hard drive
I don't know where the debug file is for ps3mencoder (I have ps3mencoder in /usr/bin & there is no log file there)
It will not let me attach the pms debug file, but here is a few lines from the beginning.

This is what I got, resolved it by:
Install or uninstall and reinstall latest version of Perl.
