It's just speculation for now, nobody knows for sure if Sony will support DivX 7. It would be great if they did though :D

I think they have to, if they want to keep their DiVX certification on the PS3.

I wouldnt say its a rumour, DivX themself is stating that the PS3 will have this support.
And it must, if its going to keep its DivX certification.
This is good news.

However, too bad that the result of this wouldnt changed that much comparing to using tsMuxer for MKV in PMS.
tsMuxer servers the MKV as-is, but without subtitles, and probably PS3 certification will not require it to support external subtitles.

So, transcoding will be needed like with DivX SD files today.

From what I've read you can incorporate subtitles into a divx file and the PS3 will pick them up.
I've not tried this myself, I don't watch SD these days.

So when Divx 7 comes along some one might make an app to do the same thing with HD files.

Did you read the article linked in the first post ?

This means you can now take H.264 video content and compress it into more manageable sizes for playback on a PC or for transferring to a DVD for playback on a HDTV. The software is available in two versions; the free DivX for Windows download which supports DivX video playback and DivX Pro for Windows which allows for DivX video creation. The software supports H.264 files that use the popular .mkv file extension.

Yes, I read the article. Did you? :) All the article says is that the DivX software supports H264 files with the .mkv extension. So, how on earth does that translate, in any way whatsoever, to the PS3 being near to supporting .mkv files??

The way I read it was, the PS3 is a DivX certified player and DivX is going to support H264 files with .mkv extensions.
So you should, if or when Sony update the firmware, play files with .mkv extensions.

Or am I reading too much into this ?
