Unfortunately that didn't help.

$ sudo apt-get install build-essential
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
build-essential is already the newest version.
build-essential set to manually installed.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.

So I guess that was already installed ?

"Please disregard. Even though I had done a make clean, to be save I deleted all of the directories and pulled new source for mplayer and ffmpeg and it compiled clean and for what ever reason it's playing all of my video files (on a 64-bit system) now so I'm all set. I appreciate everyone's suggestions and assistance.

Hmm, I'm not sure if I understand. Should I first run the:
svn checkout svn://svn.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/trunk mplayer
and then delete the $HOME/mplayer folder before running 'make' ?
How/where should I run the 'make' if delete the folder ?
I tried 'make' from $HOME when mplayer folder was deleted and got this (obviously)
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.

i mean delete the whole mplayer directory first, then run the svn command to redownload the latest.... maybe when you were downloading it it was an incomplete snapshot of code.

I tried that aswell, it made no difference
Thank you industrai for trying to help me out. But as it seems that I am getting nowhere with karmic koala, I guess I have to try my luck with Ubuntu 9.04 and these instuctions:

If someone stumbles on the same problem as I did and somehow solves it, please do share your wisdom

This is a great tutorial. I'm an Ubuntu noob and managed to follow all the way through without opening 20 extra tabs to work out how to fix steps that didn't work along the way. So it was all going great until I opened Media Server and it can't find my PS3. It's turned on and media servers are enabled in the PS3 settings. I have no idea how to troubleshoot this apart from random Googling which is doing very little to help my situation.

Try to eliminate things from the equation so you can determine what is causing the issue. Is it happening because of:

-Network Interface?
Try specifying your network card in the PMS settings
Try wireless/wired connections
Try connecting ps3 directly to PC

-Ubuntu?
Try disabling ubuntu firewall if you installed one
Try running PMS on a Windows box
Try connecting to another service on ubuntu like FTP or ssh from another PC

Router?
Try a different router, or disable all firewall settings temporarily

That's what I'd do. Also, there's a bunch of forum posts in here on that exact issue, follow their solutions. Good luck!

I find the order you turn things on to be important. Have you tried turning on your PS3, letting it load fully, then turning on the PMS?

I was able to make PMS recognize my PS3 by changing "Playstation 3" in renderers/PS3.conf to "PLAYSTATION 3".
