PS3, No Media Servers

Hi All.
I've trawled these forums and I still can not figure out why the PS3 can't find a Media Server.

PMS starts fine and finds the PS3. When I search for media servers on the PS3 it will not find any. PMS does receive the request and sends out the discover message and there are no errors reported. I have looked at the debug.log and there are no 'error' or 'unexpected' messages.

I connect through a router which has UPnP enabled. I really can't figure out what may be wrong. On PMS, after it finds the PS3 the option to restart the HTTP server is not available, is this normal? When the media server does get found, where exactly does it appear, as a main menu item or a sub item?

It will show up as a green triangle under Video or Music section on the PS3, just click on it. If it does not appear then your 5001 Port is not forwarding, you need to open it.

- Have you setup your Shared Folders under Navigation/Share Settings Tab?
- Do get 'Restart HTTP', enabled you have to go under Navigation/Share Settings Tab, then click on 'Enable Media Library'.

Right, still not getting anywhere, the PS3 can't see any media servers.

There is a listener on port 5001 when I use the command:
netstat -an | grep "LISTEN "
I get:
tcp 0 0 192.168.1.65:501 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
If I click "Enable Media Servers" on the "Navigation/Share" settings and then reset I get the following line in the trace:

It is my desktop directory that I am actually sharing, not a database directory?

Could this be a router issue? I have tried using port forwarding to the PS3 and the PC but it appears to make no difference, which I guess is what you would expect as it is intended for external applications.

What are the purposes of the "Reset Media Servers" and the "Restart HTTP server" commands?

already saw this... ps3 has recognized the server and even fetched the description, but has stopped just after, just like that...
I don't know the reason yet

there will be some revamping of the Upnp discovery code after the 1.04 release, so let's hope that will be better supported

I had a similar expereince when I first tried PMS on a Linux system. At the time I did not have any other encoder other than TMuxer. I installed FFmpeg and everything worked fine. Just a thought - try upgrading an encoder.

Does PS3 Media Server find the PS3? Do you get a Red X or a PS3 Picture in the program? If you do then they are communicating, and this is what you need to do on the PS3 to get the Media Server icon to show up under the Video or Audio Tab in the PS3 Menu.

In the PS3
- Settings / Network Settings / Internet Connection (Enable it)
- Settings / Network Settings / Internet Connection Settings
- Easy / Proxy Server (Do Not Use) / Every protocol should be set Automatic, If you have a password make sure you enter it in correctly

Do a Test on Internet connection to make sure that the router is talking to the PS3 properly.

- Settings / Network Settings / Media Server Connection (Enable it) it's at the bottom of the list.

Load up Java Media Server PS3 and the Status screen should turn from a plug to a PS3 Picture, and if that happens then you should see a green triangle under the Audio and Video Tab in the PS3.

Make sure your permissions for Java Media Server are Admin.

I shall go through all of your suggestions tonight, thanks. The thing is I am fairly sure that they are all correct. The Jave server finds the PS3 without any problems and the PS3 can access the interenet without problem. Media server is enabled, I will check the permissions of the java server though.

There is still the issue with the "Reset Media Server" and "Restart HTTP Server", any one know the differences?

Thanks again everyone, I will also try reinstalling the encoders, see if that makes any difference.

It says "Reset Media Library", it just clears the media-database that speed up navigation.

I had this problem too, you can find the thread on this forum. I don't know if the source of our problem is the same, but this is how I fixed it in archlinux:

In my debug.log the following error message appeared:
unexpected io error class java.net.unknownhostexception

This is an error where java cannot resolve the ip of the hostname, so you have to set that in /etc/hosts
In my case I added the line:
10.0.0.2 ginette ginette

I have exactly the same problem. PMS says it has found the PS3 but the PS3 can't see PMS!

* I have the PS3 icon saying it has found the PS3
* All PS3 settings are correct as per the post that outlined them
* Port 5001 is open and listening (both (TCP and UDP)

So the PS3 seems to make a request, PMS definitely sees the PS3 and sends a DISCOVER message, but for some reason PMS does not appear in XMB on the PS3? I am using version 1.04 - hope somebody can help as it is driving me nuts!
