Problem with some .mov files

Postby dlange » Thu Sep 17, 2009 9:03 pm

Hello,

first of all thanks for great piece of opensource :) It's working really great with my avi and mpeg movies!

The problem is, I imported all my movies to iTunes using "VideoDrive" which creates so called "AppleTV container". If I understand that right, the for example ".avi" movie is moved into a ".mov" container (but remains untouched, which means the encoding is still the same as before (for example xvid). The subtitles are also stored in this ".mov" container. I don't really know how it works, but it works perfectly well with iTunes so I continued and at the moment I have all my movies imported to iTunes (as AppleTV containers). It would be a really pity if it would not be possible to stream/transcode those files to my PS3 :( because everytime I try to play such a movie I get a "The file is corrupted" error message ...

Does anybody have an idea on how to fix this?

Thanks,
Daniel

The PS3 doesn't support MOV files so you'll need to remux or transcode. MEncoder can sometimes have issues with MOV files, so if you still get issues you might have to pre-convert them.
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

hmm okej, do you have any idea if I could fix this .mov problem by changing the MEncoder configuration? Or is there going to be an alternative transcoder which is better at transcoding .mov then MEncoder?

I really hope that somebody has an idea, it would be so nice to be able to use my PS3 as a mediaclient :)

[h264 @ 0x105ba00]Cannot parallelize deblocking type 1

in transcoding settings / number of cores, select "1", even if you have a dual core

Hi shagrath,

thanks for your response, but that didn't work either :(
But I think I have understood what the problem is. When I wrapped my movies into a .mov container (to import it into iTunes) the program added a frame to trick iTunes ... If I try to reconvert the movie, the program only converts the first frame (it doesn't even notice the rest of the movie, it just only sees this first frame).

I think this is the problem, but I still don't have any idea how to get PMS to stream the movie ...

ok, so maybe mencoder doesn't get it as well and do a bad transcoding of the mov file, resulting in a very shortened video. Unfortunately mencoder is kind of weak with some mov/mp4 files

Exactly, I think this might be the problem. But do you have any idea how to trick mencoder to skip the first frame?

If nothing works I could also try to retransform the movies to .avi, but I do not know how to do this either (I do not want to reencode the movie!!! this would take to much time, I'm more thinking about getting the xvid movie out of the .mov container again (it is still a xvid movie) and get it into the .avi container instead) ... this could be the easiest solution if anybody know how to do this?
I tried for example with ffmpeg (copy the codecs so that it does not reencode the movie) but I get the same problem here, ffmpeg only adds the first frame to the avi movie and then stops copying ...

you can try to add this for example in the custom options of the mencoder config panel:
Code: Select all
-ss 10

Thanks for the try, but I still get the same error :(
