File for stress testing PMS

Postby gastric » Fri Jan 30, 2009 7:33 pm

I'm curious if anyone can link/share to a file we can use for stress testing PMS? I'd think some sort of looping video file generating the maximum bitrate possible that we can use to push our systems to the maximum for use tweaking "worst case" transcoding scenarios.

Here are some 1080p samples (WMV)

I have uploaded them to Rapidshare.com :

http://rapidshare.com/users/SJJN5Y

The largest is 162MB - 2min42sec (TAXI 3)

Hope this is useful to someone :D

I got a trailer from BBC's planet earth with some birds scene, which is the ultimate CPU stress video/sample I think
(70% CPU playback on my core 2 duo with latest H264 decoder in mplayer)
the big bunny open source movie is also a good test, get the 1080p H264 version here:

I've heard of the birds scene from Earth. What would be helpful is having JUST that scene in a 5-10 minute loop purely for testing purposes. However, I lack the skills to pay the bills on that request.

I tried the Taxi 3 sample and the Bunny MP4 sample (1080p).
Taxi 3 played smooth, besides the two scenes where you saw the airplane in the air above the mountains (PS3 then reported rising bitrates up to 100Mbps so the video slowed down) but with the Bunny several parts stuttered. Strange in fact, cause my CPU doesnt report much more then 60-70% at both cores when this happens but the PSM buffer is struggeling to fill up. Wonder if its something with the buffer, or if itll make any difference if i try the same sample over gigabit?

Both played with MEncoder HT over 100mbps.

EDIT: I solved the Bunny sample stutter, when changed to gigabit! Peak bitrate shown in PMS is 174Mbps, and my CPU is at 40-70% (AMD Dual Core) with task manager showing ~15% utilized of my gigabit connection (=~150Mbps)

I managed to play it within 15 Mbps, with a quality setting of "keyint=25:vqscale=3" (but I got an overclocked E6750)
You can set vqscale=2, and limit to 50 mbits as well

Well, why limit if we have the bandwitdh required?
I mean, all limits wil cause quality loss. I have the the best quality profile in PMS.

testing purposes, and I'm quite positive limiting to 50mbps will give you the same video quality than letting it stream at 150

Okey, well, i dont think my CPU will handle limiting at 50Mbps together with best profile (keyint=1:vqscale=1:vqmin=1).
