Installing PMS on NAS (Synology DS-207+)

The server is indeed slow on the NAS, but suitable enough for simple things like music and photo's.
I also noticed that the server seems to 'disappear' from the PS3, when it encounters non-fatal but severe errors.
Like when I try to listen to internet radio (see a couple of mssgs above).

I still haven't had the chance to do enough testing and fooling around, but i'm a little disappointed in the performance of my NAS.

MP3s, Photos and even videos (not transcoded) all work fine, but actually getting to them takes forever -- indexing the files/folders is just too slow (usechace is enabled, thumbnails disabled). Somewhat related: viewing comics archives (CBR and CBZs) doesn't work so great either. In addition to indexing the files, there's the huge cost of extracting them. I tried various Web feeds, but none seemed to work -- mostly got the same mkfifo errors that you mentioned...

Oh well... at least i know that the setup works in theory, and i have a better idea of how much power is needed for a server like this...

Hi all,
Does anyone know if the Synology DS-109j is powerful enough to run this?

Guys,

I just got the specs of LS-XHL:

MemTotal: 255772 kB
CPU: 1.2Ghz

I believe this should be powerful enough to handle PMS??

Any thoughts?

I was trying Atrem's method on my DS-209. It's great, detailed thank You!
Everything worked fine BUT it seems I'm not able to run jamvm.
When I try to execute the modified PMS.sh script I get Segmentation fault (core dumped) error... :(
If I try to run pms.jar separately (jamv -jar pms.jar) I get the same error message.

Anybody else run into the same problem on DS-209? Or anybody here who has managed to make PMS work DS-209?

Thank You!

Arthur

I have the exact same problem, anybody who can help ? :)

Guys any comments on this.... do you think this will be powerful enough to transcode on the fly or will it be waste of time.

Thanks

For anyone intereseted, here is the full Marvel CPU spec for LS-XHL: http://www.marvell.com/files/products/e ... 4_ver1.pdf
With that in mind (256772KB DDR2 and 1.2GHz with 16bit@800MHz), I'd say good luck trying to get any HD transcoding on that, although maybe SD. Remuxing may be possible.
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum.

hi guys am at this stage and getting the same issue how do i do the below can anyone give a simple step by step on what i need to do as i dont know linux at all and followed all the steps before mentioned in this topic.

Thanks

atrem wrote:Hi guys,

Followed the steps in this post, overwrote the files in the (svn) PMS folder with the files from Omega's zipfile, installed the linux version (pms-linux-1.20) created by ant on my NAS....AND GUESS WHAT....IT WORKS! :D Great work Omega :P
My PS3 now sees PMS and I'm able to watch photo's and listen to mp3's stored on the NAS. Didn't check (lowres) video yet.

But...what doesn't work is listening to internet radio.
The only reason why I started this effort btw.
To find an easy way of listening to my (icecast) radiostation, broadcasting standalone from the same NAS(!), on my ps3.

I get this error when I try to listen to my station:

I dunno if it's caused by PMS or something else (mplayer?)

I can't check the logfile because Omega turned debugging off.
When I change debugging back on in PMS.java, ANT doesn't create output (Filewriter error).

Any ideas what this 'mkfifo return code -6' means?
