noob questions here! So please bare with me :s..

PMS_USER is my normal login name in linux I suppose? But how can i check this PMS_GROUP ? What is this? How can i check it?
I'm running linux Mint btw..

Can't seem to run this ps3 media server as a system service. It runs automatically when logging into linux, but i want to run it to run during boot so i don't have to login.

I'm working on a complete rewrite of the script. I'm almost done and will update the first post with the new version as soon as I'm ready.

For Morb:
The purpose of this script is exactly to start PS3 media server as service without the need to login.
There is help in the first post on how to correctly install it on Ubuntu based systems (like Linux Mint).
If your username is "pippo" put that on both PMS_USER and PMS_GROUP.

Hi,

very good work. I just noticed that my Debian Squeeze is trying to start the pms server twice during boot. Of course the second attempt fails because it is already started. Do you know anything about that ?

Version 2.0 works fine with debian 5. Thank you for sharing.
Logging feature is really neat, especially how it creates separate log-files for each month.

Hi,

nice script. What about this?

Code: Select all
    restart)
    $0 stop
    $0 start
    ;;

And hints for newbies: If you ever started PMS before, you need to chown -R /tmp/javaps3media and /install/dir/pms to user.group,
so that debug.log, database, and the fifos are accessable. They have eventually been created already with a different user.group.

[EDIT: just saw that when debug.log cannot be written in apps dir, it will go to temp. But I am sure we need write access to database.]

BR,
Carsten.

Hi,
Awesome script. Thanks.
I had to create the log directory and chmod it to root:adm then change the run as entries in the script file to root:admin. I also had to make the new PMS.sh file executable.
I can run the script manually but cant get it to load on boot or login.
It seems the line
sudo update-rc.d PS3MediaServer defaults 90

doesn't work for my system. I have he latest Ubuntu 9.04. When i searched for the rc.d i only found rcx.d where x=0-6 or S, I assume for each run level.
I am really new to Linux, how do I get this script to run on boot without logging in?
Thanks.

Then you haven't written well the command, as i'm on Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 too, and 'update-rc.d' is a general debian command.
Keep a look at the command, is without spaces = update-rc.d

Hi,
I have managed to run the command without an error.
However the media server is not found (presumably not started) unless i log into Ubuntu and start the script either directly or using the following command
'sudo /etc/init.d/PS3MediaServer start'
I have checked the rcx folders and found that the startup link is in there correctly.

Please help to troubleshoot as i am very new to Ubuntu.
