Aspect Ratio Problem with Sony Bravia v5500 and mkv

Hi, i'm new in this forum and above all sorry for my poor english i'm italian.

I'v a problem with ps3 media server 1.20, MENCODER and mkv videos.

Every time i stream HD video files i have a problem with the aspect ratio. The image is tall and slim. I've tried to change many options like adding "-vf scale=1280:576" in the decoding options but nothing happen. Or if i try to activate the scaler option, every resolution i put in text box seems have no effect.

I'm streaming the videos to a bravia v5500 via lan through a modem/router (sitecom wl-304). My pc is powerfull enought to transcode hd file (Q6600, 4gb ram, ati 3870 512 mb, 100mbit lan)

I don't know how to solve tihs problem.

userdefined mencoder option "-vf expand[=b:h:x:y:o:a:r]" may be a workaround...

I'm experiencing the same problem....it looks like the Bravia TVs do scale the picture to the maximum height, i.e. croping it horizontally. It also trying to switch the aspect on the TV does not help. As otmanix proposes I have added "-vf expand=:::::16/9" to the user-defined mencoder options. This helps in many cases except where no transcoding takes place, i.e. where PMS executes something like "mencoder -ovc copy -of rawvideo" where "-vf expand" has no effect.
Does anybody have an idea how to either convince the Bravia (I have a 46W5500) not to crop the picture or how to force PMS to always transcode such movies ?

I use -vf expand=:::::16/9 parameter to make videos shown correct aspect ratio. But when use it on .MKV videos, subtitle won't work correcly, subtitles goes overlap. i can't really read it after a while
Subtitles are .sub format.
With xvid movies, subtitles always work ok.

subs work with mkv when i don't use vf expand parameter and video is streched

I tried to add -nooverlapsub to mencoder commandline but this does not fix the issue.

Anyone, any ideas ?

Try setting OSD to 1 like this: -vf expand=::::1:16/9
This worked for me.

Thanx, seems it is better now. eg. the subtitles are removed before new one appears however i have them duplicated - they appear twice with different size...

May i know your exact settings for advanced codec parameters and renderer conf ?

I have similar issue as you herbie_53 with W5500 and mkv:s using tsMuxeR, seems like the .mkv/AVC must be in the exact correct aspect- ratio so 720p=1280x720 works like a charm, also over WIreless G.
But as soon as an other format for example(1280x688) then either I get a black sceen still playing the sound or a mosic colour screen just hanging.
seems tsMuxeR doesn't use the "-vf expand=:::::16/9".

I don't have these issue when using transcodeing throu MPEG2 then everything works fine (but need much more bandwidth and CPU) eq (-vf expand=:::::16/9 works).
So anyone
how can I force nontranscoded mkv:s to do the same expand eq fill the screen to the correct ratio ?

You can't. It is BRAVIA limitation (TV can't play HD H.264 video with aspect other than 16:9 and 4:3, and level > 4.1)
