mencoder and rmvb 720p

Postby Revival » Sat Jan 16, 2010 1:21 am

hi there, i posted in other forums before but i guess i should make my own thread as i still cant find a solution. basically, everyone works great, even 720p mkv, but however, 720p rmvb seems to stutter alot and the buffers dont look like they r filling either.

i took a shot at looking at my debug.log and notcied thats its killing the buffer, for whatever the reason i dont know.

anyone have any idea why its doing that?

here is the link to my debug file.

ps3mediaserver has been great to me, with that said this is the only problem i have with it.

From what you've stated here, and in the beta thread, it sounds like your CPU isn't able to keep up with the playback rate. Have you tried pausing the movie and seeing if the buffer fills all the way after 10 minutes or so? If it does, then unpause and see if you can make it through the movie before the buffer empties.

yes your CPU is too weak. Unfortunately RMVB decoding do not benefit from the H264 multicore option you can enable for mkvs

i havent tried to pause and let the buffer fill before, but from what i see from my cpu monitor it doesnt even seem like its using all of it. in case i didnt mention, i am using a macbook with 2.16ghz core 2 duo with 3gb of ram. i read the faq and it seems like that is more than enough to encode HD videos? or am i wrong to assume that?

besides trying to wait and see if the buffer fills, is there anything i can do?

Not much, try to decrase the transcoding quality maybe

ok, so at the moment i cant transcode HD rmvb because of mencoder's limitations with rmvb. in addition, because of no multicore support my processor is not strong enough to transcode HD rmvb. This does not have anything to do with my network setting.

am i correct to assume this? in the foreseeable future will this change?

edit: after letting the buffer load abit, it works perfectly now. with that said however, today i encountered a 720p rmvb that would keep spiking in bitrate regardless, i suspect it was a bad file or what not since the quality was everywhere also. i really really hope in the future there will be better rmvb support from mencoder, but thanks for everything thus far!
