MP4 File

Postby kpdesgns492 » Sat Nov 07, 2009 7:44 pm

When I attempt to play a MP4 file I get an error 80028808 saying that the file cannot be played. However, if I scroll down to the area that says transcode and then play the transcoded version it seems to play. Is this normal?

I seem to have a similar issue (with the latest version and the latest beta version, too). No MP4-file is played, there is always the message "data corrupt". Surprisingly, when trying to view a MOV-file, transcoding and streaming will work perfectly.

Here is an excerpt from the debug.log (didn't know where to start copying...):

mp4 can be tricky to play on ps3, could be a server bug (bad mime type), or a ps3 one (firmware bug)... Hard to answer without testing the sample

I've tested about 5 MP4-files (.m4v) and none did work only the other ones which needed transcoding.

So I must have done something wrong when creating the MP4-file?

Maybe these specs from one of the films help...

H.264, 720 x 576, Millions
AAC, 2 channel, 48000 Hz
2.634,57 kBit/s

Yes, but it is some time ago I created them - did not have a PS3 back then.

So, would it be best (when using Handbrake) to use the PS3 preset? Because I would like to watch the films both on my Mac (iTunes) and on the PS3. I guess back then I created them using the AppleTV preset...

Ah ok, then you can add mine to the list :-)

Well, that means I have to transcode them into the appropriate format myself, don't I? Can I use the PS3-preset built into Handbrake for that?

Which file format would you recommend, considering that they should also be available in iTunes as well?

yes, and yes

about the format, mp4 is a good compromise I guess (no .mov please :p), but make sure your converted videos are playable everywhere

Just wanted to make one more comment about my original post. When I copied the entire MP4 to the PS3, the file plays perfectly. Is there a difference between streaming and having the MP4 on the PS3?
