AVI files on PS3 Slim

New to this, please be patient. I have just got a new PS3 slim and installed PS3MS on my iMac running Snow Leopard. PS3 reads mp3 files with slight hiccups (network from time to time) but refuses to read any .avi files. First my movies folder showed #--TRANSCODE--# folder with the avi files appearing as folders within it. Later, added avi extension to skip list under 'common transcoding settings' but now the tracks simply don't appear on the PS3. help!

You know you COULD just stick the .avi file on a thumb drive and watch it
