Maximum depth of 8?

I've consistently had problems browsing to some of the content being served by PS3 Media Server. It seems to be the case that if the depth of the tree exceeds a certain size (I think it's 8), the PS3 won't let me descend further into the tree. The same content stored in a shallower tree is served without issues.

Is this a client-side problem (i.e. a limitation of the PS3 UI) or it a problem with PS3 Media Server?

In either case, how can I work around this? I can't see an obvious setting for this on either the PS3 or in PS3 Media Server's configuration settings.

Not really. You'll have to share the folders farther down in the tree.
