I usually prefer .avis are streamed for multiple reasons, like faster FF and RW, and the viewing of embedded subtitles (I actually use AVIAddXSubs quite a bit).
On the off chance that an AVI gives me a network error, it's not a big deal to go into the transcode folder, but forcing it to always would be bad in my setup.
Even odder, I have not had a SINGLE network error on any of my movies, in any format since I switched my network over to all gigabit. I have my Mac mini intel gigabit to a netgear gigabit switch (not a router) which goes to my Apple Time Capsule router.
I had network errors with my netgear router (which I replaced with the Apple Time capsule and netgear switch combo). So that's kind of interesting that it somehow makes a difference. I know that the Apple router won't allow UPnP, whereas my netgear router did, so maybe that somehow enters into this? Who knows.
