xbr-46hx909 and avi files

I have a prior post with this issue, but don't know if I posted it in the right forum. I have a xbr-46hx909 and it plays mpg's just fine via the ps3 media server, but I can't seem to get the .avi files to work. I know it's running on the ps3 media server because I see the buffer going, but I just see a black screen on the TV - no video no sound. It even makes the TV restart sometimes after viewing the black screen for a min or less.

Do you have any solution for this setup to view .avi formats? Or is there anything I can use to view avi formats on the TV?

If so, please walk me through any suggestions. I am not too familiar with media servers, but do know how to follow directions.
