video plays fast

Postby majorwest » Sun Dec 19, 2010 9:53 pm

In possession of a movie where it is split into two separate files, one mkv video and the other ac3 audio. Merged the two using mkvmerge but when streamed to my tv via ps3 it plays fast w/ no audio. However, it plays at normal speed w/ audio when played on my pc. The original video file (w/o the audio merged) when streamed to my tv plays at normal speed. So am I missing a step in mkvmerge when merging the two files? Or do I need to tweak a setting in ps3ms?

1- Intel i7 920 @ 2.67
6GB DDR3 1333
GeForce GTX 275 896MB
Corsair 750TX Power Supply
Windows7 Home
PS3MS v1.20.412
2- Streaming to PS3, no custom renderer profile
3- PC <-Wifi G-> TRENDnet TEW-639GR 802.11b/g/n Router <-1gbps-> PS3
4- MEncoder as primary
5- Download a torrent file that contained a video only mkv file (stripped of audio) and several ac3 audio files (various languages) with instructions to merge the audio language of your choice to the video using mkvmerge. The new video file outputted by mkvmerge plays very fast when streamed to my tv thru PS3MS (like it's in fast forward mode), however when I play the same file on my pc with VLC it plays as it should at normal speed. It should be noted that the original video file (stripped of audio) when streamed to the tv plays at normal speed. Why does the new output video, with audio merged, play fast while the original video file with no audio play at normal speed?
6- No debug.log file

Thanks for your response. Although my problem isn't specifically an a/v mismatch, I will read thru the thread at the link and see if I can arrive at a solution.

are you sure you have the settings correct in MKVmerge. I noticed you muxed with v.4.1.1

It is known to cause issues in MKV if header settings are not correct.

Your video specs look PS3 compatible, have you tried using MKV2VOB. I am guessing it would just convert the DTS to AC3, then mux the video and the the AC3 into a MPG file. Wouldn't hurt to try. It would probably only take a few minutes. If it tells you its going to transcode the video, then either let it transcode the video, or cancel the job.

Hi Devildog. To be honest, there were no settings in MKVmerge to correct. I simply added both the video and audio file as input then hit the remux button. The resulting file plays fine on my pc, audio in sync with video all the way to the end of the movie. I'll try installing an alternate version of MKVmerge and see if that works. Haven't tried MKV2VOB, may give that a go as well. Thanks again!

Reading your post again, I noticed you said you muxed a video stream with an AC3 audio stream. Yet in the MediaInfo, it is showing a DTS stream. Not sure if you were mistaken, or some weird labelling issue is causing problems?????

Have you tried muxing with an older version of MKVMerge. Specifically 3.4.0 or older.
http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/win32/

Now, generally a remux of with 3.4.0 can correct header issues caused by newer versions. I use it myself. There is a guide somewhere in here of how to use 4.0.0 or newer versions properly, but 3.4.0 can just be used as is.

If this suggestion doesn't work, then give MKV2VOB a shot. Good luck
