DVD streaming without transcoding?

Postby newbie2007 » Thu Feb 19, 2009 4:37 am

Hi,

I'm new to video streaming on PS3 and PMS and have a small question hope you guys can help.

Before knowing PMS, I use WM11 as the DNLA server. I have some DVD stored as VIDEO_TS directories on my HDD. Since WM11 doesn't recognize VOB format, I had to use VOB2MPG which essentially convert the VOB file to MPG file without any reencoding (the MPEG2 video and AC3 audio streams are untouched, only the chapter infos are remove). PS3 plays these MPG file perfectly.

My question is: does PMS pass the video and audio from VOB files to PS3 without on-the-fly reencoding as well? I don't want to use VOB2MPG and prefer to keep my original VIDEO_TS folder.

Thanks

Hi again,

This is just to follow up on my previous post. I found a way to stream VOB to PS3 without any reencoding by setting "Remux with audio track is AC3" and in the "Expert Settings", I use "vcodec == mpeg2 :: -ovc copy". Now I can stream DVD VIDEO_TS folder without any quality loss! (PMS CPU usage on my laptop is only 2-3% :-) during streaming)

My next question is I cannot display subtitle. PS3 says no subtitle are available. Can somebody help?

Thanks

No!
You must transcode to see subtitles ;)

Thanks. I guess I have to sacrifice subtitle for quality and smooth streaming then. My laptop (core 2 duo 1.86GHz) is probably not good enough to do encoding on-the-fly. PMS in my laptop has troubles encoding even 320x240 FLV files :-(

I don't think it's CPU related

Hmm, I can stream my DVD from my HDD smoothly without any stuttering, so it cannot be bandwidth (network/harddrive) related neither. Do you have suggestion?

I use all PMS default settings so far. I don't touch any options except that expert option "vcodec=mpeg2 :: -ovc copy".

Check your transcoding buffer status(on the status tab) while playing the movie. If the buffer runs out it will give you some indication where the problem lies.

What Shagrath thought about your CPU is that "Core 0 zero" will transcode DVD on-the-fly without problems so your Core2duo have to! ;)
Your Core 2 Duo CPU is 10x more powerful to achieve DVD transcoding on-the-fly, so it is not CPU related ;)
