.MKV Stream & Subtitles

Postby DArcher132 » Fri Jan 29, 2010 6:48 am

Some of my .MKV files (backed up from my own personal blu-ray collection of course :D ) have embedded subtitles. I know I can check the box to turn them on or off within the server settings, but is there anyway to turn them on or off during playback of a movie. Let's say in Lord of the Rings when they begin to speak "elvish", I want to turn them on, and then off when the scene is done. Thanks for the kick ass program BTW!

Is this option possible to incorporate into the next build of the PS3 media server, or is it too complex? Sorry, may be a dumb question since I am obviously not a programmer.

The PS3 doesn't allow it.

Since you are encoding the blu-ray yourself I would suggest including only the 'forced' subs. For instance in Avatar the only subtitles would be when they speak 'Navi' and the rest of the text is simply not there to be displayed.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe DivX is the only streamable format with selectable soft subs for PS3.

DivX AVI's with embedded XSubs are the only non disc/AVCHD media the PS3 supports for soft-subtitles.
The initial question was about MKVs with soft-subs, which the PS3 doesn't support at all.

On the fly transcoding/remuxing? from MKV with subtitles to DivX with embedded soft subs would do what you want. I'm not if sure PMS can do that - someone responded no when I asked this in the general forum.

I have found that encoding anything to AVI is both a pain in the ass and a lengthy process. I would think "on the fly transcoding" would not be possible from MKV to AVI.

Re-encoding seperate of PMS is always an option, but I am pretty sure MKV to AVI is not feasible with PMS.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.
