Audio codecs for streaming

Postby ecn113 » Thu Dec 31, 2009 8:10 pm

Can someone refresh on what audio codecs are able to be streamed to the PS3 (ie. DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-HD-MA, TrueHD, LPCM 2chan,5.1,6.1,7.1 ect)?

Thanks!

With PS3 Media Server? Every one of them :)

I don't think so 8-)
DTS-HD, DTS-HD MA and (TrueHD) can't be streamed as is. Only "core 5.1" is used from DTS-HD(MA) because MEncoder doesn't support it. Also 7.1 is no go for MEncoder (except TrueHD and LPCM 7.1) because its decoder is 5.1 capable only.
So the question to happy.neko, how did you enable DTS-HD(MA) 7.1 output(transcoded to AC3/LPCM) when MEncoder supports 5.1 decoding only? 8-)
Edit:
Ok I found this comment in your pull:
Code: Select all
Disable 7.1 DTS-HD MA to LPCM transcoing because of channel mapping bug

but later I can see in the changelog:
Code: Select all
Added DTS HD-MA support up to 7.1 channels: DTS core remux, LPCM and AC3 transcoding
Added Dolby TrueHD support up to 7.1 channels: LPCM (recommended) and AC3 (buggy for 7.1) transcoding

So, how it is with 7.1 for DTS-HD(MA) audio?
Thanks

7.1. DTS HD: AC3 transcode or DTS core bitstream

7.1. DTS HD: AC3 transcode or DTS core bitstream

You mean
7.1. DTS HD: 5.1 AC3 transcode or 5.1 DTS core bitstream

Am I right? MEncoder decoder can't decode more than 5.1 for DTS so if output will be transcode to 7.1 AC3 or 7.1 LPCM, there will be 2 fake channels.

DTS core in DTS HD is 5.1 max. So yes, output will be always 5.1.

Yes I know that core is only 5.1. Because of that I pointed out this "untruth" 8-) :

Code: Select all
Added DTS HD-MA support up to 7.1 channels: DTS core remux, LPCM and AC3 transcoding

"up to 7.1 channels should be changed to 5.1 only because decoder can't extract more than 6 channels"

Ok, sorry, better to say something like:
Code: Select all
Added DTS HD-MA support up to 7.1 channels: DTS core remux, LPCM and AC3 transcoding (outputting in 5.1 channels max)

For someone it can be little bit confusing because it seems people should see 7.1 on their receivers or on PS3 :)

Wow couldn't agree more here. I spent several hours trying to understand why I am getting DTS 5.1 on my receiver even when I am clearly streaming a DTS-HD MA 7.1 file. The description in the changelog is HIGHLY misleading.
