Works on wireless, but not wired

Postby Hermansen » Thu Feb 05, 2009 11:28 pm

Just started using this today, after giving up getting tveristy to work, and this hooked up nicely at once.
Except it only works through wireless connection. Both my wired and wireless connection goes through the same router(Zyxel NBG460N), and the PS3 is wired to that.
I can be connected to both networks and just switch in the general configuration tab and restart the server, don't have to physically disconnect one or the other for it to work. And I have tried doing that as well

I have tried writing in the IP adress in the general configuration tab, but this has no effect. Have only opened ports in my router for the wired connection though, which makes it even stranger ;) (it doesn't work if I close the ports again either, just for the record)
And by not working I mean the media server doesn't even find the PS3, if that's any help.

I use vista and updated the software not too long ago, so I think I have the newest version :P
During my testing with TVersity I have opened up network services in the windows firewall and set NIC-priorities, so I think those should be all right as well. And if it has any relevance, I could access the tversity server through the PS3 internet browser, but not XMB.

Any suggestions appreciated, hope I provided good enough info

Added:
From the debug file, things look okay as far as I know, it even ends with
Code: Select all
[Thread-20] DEBUG 23:41:19.377 Setting multicast network interface: name:eth2 (Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller) index: 8 addresses:
/192.168.1.33;
[main] TRACE 23:41:19.377 It's ready! You should see the server appears on XMB
[Thread-20] TRACE 23:42:21.517 Receiving search request from 192.168.1.33! Sending DISCOVER message...

And then it just keeps repeating that last line

just a guess, with both nic's enabled, you might have created a routing problem, whereby pms gets the ps3 request on one nic, and answer with the other, which would of course not work.

try disabling one nic

No luck, unfortunately.
Even tried removing the drivers for the wireless nic, and thereby "uninstalling" it to windows, but still nothing :?
Thanks for trying though =)

Is there a way to force the media server to connect to a specific ip?

Also, I don't know how much weight I should put on this MS tool; http://www.microsoft.com/windows/using/ ... fault.mspx , but this is the result I am getting under UPnP, everything else passes. The other day it seemed like it at least thought it was able to create some port mappings, but couldn't find them again when it was done creating. Not really sure what has happened since then...
It's the same result for wired/wireless
Code: Select all
Result:
The operating system is Windows Vista
The firewall is enabled
Exceptions are allowed by the firewall
UPnP is enabled by the firewall
UPnP services are running
UPnP Discovery is enabled
Detecting Internet Gateway Devices on the network

Enabled : TRUE
Description : removeme0

pPortMappingCollection->Add() failed=80040211

I hope this can get resolved somehow, I want to use my gigabit router for something useful, and it's just way too much stuttering via wireless :D

Hmm, I don't even know how to properly explain this, but at least it's working, so I'll just mention the steps I took right before, just in case it could help someone.

Started poking around the settings in my router, trying a couple of multicast settings etc. but eventually just ended up with them as they were before I started.
Then I noticed the media server actually found the PS3 if I changed the port under the general settings tab, and then restarted http server. Would stop working again if I quit and restarted the server though. Then I had to switch ports again.
And it got back to not finding the PS3, even with my little "trick" yet again, so I then tried restarting the service from start->run->services.msc.
Still it said it couldn't find the PS3, but this time I could find the server from XMB, played movies and everything.
After another reboot of the server, everything worked as it should!
I just pray it'll keep working now. (Changed the service to manual start as opposed to automatic for the time being, maybe I'll change it back if I feel really confident one day 8-)

EDIT:
Nah, stopped working again :P
I remembered I tried reinstalling without booting as well, got a problem with wrapper.dll and wrapper.exe, and that was the time it was working. Rebooted because flac wasn't working, and now it's worse than ever :/
Doesn't even work on wireless now. I knew I should have left it alone

Hmmm, you could be running into something similar to me, as indicated on the google code issues page: http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver ... ry%20Stars
A bulk of the responses are actually related to a completely different issue, but the stated problem is still there, although it seems to be a bit more intermittent now.
I provide NO application support via PM or email, so please post your question to the forum per the Forum Rules.

Hmm, yes, that looks kind of familiar. At least before it stopped working on wireless as well.
Should it be doing this? (192.168.1.33 is the ip of my wired nic)

Re: Works on wireless, but not wired

Postby TwinMoonsAnime » Mon Feb 09, 2009 10:27 pm

I'm having similar problems with PMS not finding my PS3's. I have two PS3's connected to the same switch as the WHS machine running PMS. It was working fine for days but the last couple of days it won't recognize either of my two PS3's. I have rebooted the PS3's as well as PMS and it still says PS3 not found. On the PS3 however, I do see PMS on the XMB but it does not behave correctly. It shows all video files as being over 95 hours long and shows the filesize as 94 gigs eventhough I have checked the box to make files copy-able to the PS3.

I've seen this problem posted in multiple threads but haven't really seen a good solution for it yet. My suggestion is to do it like Twonky. Twonky keeps a list of the IP addresses and what devices are connected at each IP (PS3, xbox 360, etc.). If for some reason it has got it wrong, you can just update the table. I think it would really help if we can just tell PMS what IP address our PS3 is at. I realize some are using HDCP, but I have given my mediaserver and my PS3's statis IP's on the network so PMS shouldn't have to look for them. Any way to do that?

I landed on the router being the problem today too, definitely getting a new one.
Tested a bit with a computer running xp and had the same problems, seems completely random whether or not the media server will work now.
Finally tried using the router that came with my adsl bundle-thingy, and everything worked perfectly with everything set on automatic, so I guess this can be closed and the blame can be fully placed on that damn NBG460N ;)
(I guess TVersity not working either, plus 2xformat and re installation of vista should have pointed me in that direction before, but oh well)
