Wired connection does not allow PMS and PC Internet

Postby fluent » Sun Oct 18, 2009 10:05 am

Hi all,

I haven't been able to find a solution for this problem on any forum so far; so maybe someone has an idea I can try...

I am wanting to connect my PS3 directly via Cat6 crossover cable to my PC using PMS v1.11.356
The crossover cable is connected to the gigabit ethernet port on my motherboard, and my PC connects to the net/router wirelessly with a Belkin N USB adapter. (PC is dual-core 3.16Ghz on XP Pro)
When I setup a static IP address I can get PMS and the PS3 to connect and it works brilliantly, except that my wireless connection to the router cuts outs; getting rid of my internet.

So, does anyone know how I can setup a connection between my PS3 and PC for PMS to work, while still allowing my PC to connect to the router independently?

I have had it all work before wirelessly, I am just wanting to eliminate stuttering and menu lag at this point. Unfortunately I don't have the option of connecting each via the router.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Cheers.

Does your wireless router have Ethernet ports? If so, why not just connect the PS3 and the PC directly to the router?

As I mentioned I can't connect it directly to the router - it's in another room in my flat. :)

Simple answer ya:

Dont bridge the connection.

Make sure you set ethernet network settings to static IP (you probably already have)

Rightclick the wireless one >Properties > Sharing tab > and tick the boxes to allow internet sharing connection.

Make sure you dont have ICS from the ethernet one.

Your setup is same as mine.

@Zomgheals

Unfortunately I just can't get them to work cohesively.

The solution is to not use the bridge but create an additional subnet for PS3 and PC wired connection. To enable Internet for PS3 one can use Internet connection sharing (ICS) on the PCs wired NIC which will enable router, DNS-proxy and DHCP-server on the PC (only on that NIC!). One can then make automatic IP-setup on PS3.

this was mentioned in the post and seems to be how you remedied it zomgheals? I don't know how to setup an additional subnet though (network knowledge is fairly average).

For the static IP setup, I used:

PC
- Local Area Network 2
IP 192.168.1.10
Subnet Mask255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.99 (router IP)
DNS blank

- Wireless USB Connection
Allowed ICS, ticked all boxes, set it for Local Area Network 2

PS3
192.168.1.11
255.255.255.0
192.168.1.99
DNS 192.168.1.99

is there anything here you can see I've done incorrectly?

(note: once I unplug the cable from the PS3 my net returns, so it must be something in the numbers I've input right...?)

Cheers for the help

router ip >>

make the gateway for ethernet 192.168.1.10 (Your static IP for PC)

EDIT: Actually if your Router is on 192.168.1.x (I also assume your wireless is the same) Move your ethernet to 10.1.1.x and same subnet and same gateway

EDIT2: Just re-read, basicly to make a 2nd subnet, make static IP for
PC to 10.1.1.1 and 255.255.255.0 with 10.1.1.1 for gateway + dns
PS3 to 10.1.1.2 and 255.255.255.0 with 10.1.1.1 gateway and dns

I had wireless on auto-detect.
Could you please clarify the reply a little more though; it's a little confusing as to which boxes I'm editting.

Also, my router details are as below on static
IP 192.168.1.30 (though to access router via address bar it is 192.168.1.99)
SUB 255.255.255.0
GATE 192.168.1.1
DNS 202.74.207.10

So if this changes anything, please incorporate this.

Thanks so much again mate for helping me sort this, it has been bugging me so much. I'll try decifer all that tonight and let you know how it goes, but yea, if you could clarify it a little more that would be awesome.

Well, I couldn't get any of the above to work out.
I ended up running Windows Network Wizard and miraculously it worked! Once...
Unfortunately it's quite unstable and doesn't reconnect when you power the PS3 again...
So, until I get a new router (N-wireless connected directly to the PS3 and ADSL into the wall) I'm gonna suffer with the inbuilt G wireless and watch the other stuff later.

Sorry I couldn't provide a more solid solution for anyone else with the same problem.

Okay,

I'll put it simple as possible :P

Leave Wireless settings as is.

Now edit the Ethernet (Wired)

IP: 10.1.1.1
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: BLANK
DNS: 10.1.1.1

Now edit the PS3
IP: 10.1.1.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 10.1.1.1
DNS: 10.1.1.1

Now open PMS and go to General Configuration Tab
Look for the [Force] area and select your wired card.
force the IP to 10.1.1.1

Save settings, reboot PMS and should work like a charm.

Hope this was easier to read :D
