Problem while playing .mkv file using tsMuxer

Postby satheeshu » Tue Aug 11, 2009 3:09 am

Hello,

I am new to using this awesome software... so please excuse me for any of my ignorance.
I am running my PMS with default settings on WindowsXP on Intel Core Duo 2.00GHZ 2GB RAM. I am having trouble playing one of my .mkv files of size around 8.5 GB. If I use MEncoder, I get the stuttering video after 10 sec so when I tried using tsMuxer file from the #--TRANSCODE--# folder, It complained "Corrupted Data". I am not sure what's wrong with my configuration or the file.

I see the error message in PMS as "[win32/tsMuxeR.exe] TRACE 20:44:20.546 Process C:\Program Files\PS3 Media Server\win32\tsMuxeR.exe has a return code of -2! Maybe an error occured... check the log file"
Here is an extract from the debug.log, Please let me know if I am missing any settings.

### Updated ####
I am streaming via wiFi and using netgear WGR614 router.

Thanks
Satheesh

Re: Problem while playing .mkv file using tsMuxer

Postby Jagged » Tue Aug 11, 2009 3:34 pm

The main issue I see is:

[Thread-64] INFO 20:44:16.500 H264 file: F:\Movies\Transformers\Transformers.mkv is not ps3 compatible !

So, it is going to need to transcode it to MPEG-2 in order to stream it to the PS3.

There are 3 possibilities:
#1) the CPU cant transcode the video fast enough.
#2) The bitrate setting for the transcoded MPEG-2 is too high to stream across the wireless network.
#3) Both of the above.

It's going to be very difficult to stream 1080p MPEG2 video over a wireless connection at any decent quality. You can try setting the Maximum bandwidth in Mbits/s to something reasonable (5-15Mbit perhaps). Also, check the buffer status. If it's empty or close to empty, then the CPU cannot keep up with transcoding.

Thank you for the response. I will try modifying the Max bandwidth settings after i get home tonight.

Also interestingly, I have few other 1080p movies of larger size than this movie.. but i was able to play them with no issues. So I am going to check those files today to see if they are compatible with PS3.

Thanks

My thought would be that if you want to stream 1080p wirelessly you are going to have to avoid transcoding and that simply means converting the mkv to mp4, try MKV2VOB.

Hey guys, this isn't an intention to hi-jack the thread, I'm just curious from reading here, is the Maximum Bandwidth setting just a "bar" that's set to "theorize" the bit-rate being sent? From what I've noticed so far, setting the max bandwidth has no affect on the actual bit-rate being sent the PS3 as I've been getting 48Mbps data stream when I set an 8Mb cap with lossless quality (I'm assuming this is like putting a small blanket (bandwidth cap) on an elephant (throughput/bitrate) to try and hide it, the elephant is too big for the blanket and you end up seeing the whole elephant anyways. The only option is to get it a bigger blanket (increase the bandwidth cap by moving off of wireless) or get a smaller elephant (decreasing the quality))

Sorry for the analogy...a long day. Is my analogy correct, or am I way off? Thank for your response.
