Hyperthreading and multiple cores

Hi,

Just a quick question. I have a Pentium 4 CPU and ps3mediaserver is reporting "it appears your system has 2 cores". As far as I was aware I had only one CPU. Is this normal for a hyperthreading CPU, and am I best off select only 1 core?

No, use only one. P4 is one core processor but use hyperthreading to simulate two threads, but MEncoder is not optimized for hyperthreading.

If you run taskmgr.exe how many CPU's do you see in the performance tab?

If you can see 2 set PMS to that if you see 1..........

So would it be suggested to turn off hyperthreading in the bios settings? Wondering if this might increase preformance?

no, but it's advised to select "1 core" in PMS

Thought so. Although since I bought the system 2nd hand, for a while I thought maybe it HAD two CPUs Woulda been nice...

I always thought my crappy streaming was due to crappy system specs, especially since PMS performed about the same as TVersity. But since I switched it down to just one core instead of the two found through hyper-threading, the stuttering has pretty much ceased to exist for the same files. Albeit I'll still need to upgrade to play anything of HD quality, this is a big step forward.
